Job Details:Mercer University Department of Public Safety is searching for a Dispatcher on the Macon campus.


Responsibilities:

The Public Safety Dispatcher serves as the primary communications center for the Department of Public Safety and is responsible for receiving emergency and non-emergency calls for service, dispatching police officers and security personnel, monitoring life safety and security systems, and providing timely and accurate information to responding personnel. This position is critical to maintaining the safety and security of the university community by coordinating emergency response efforts, prioritizing calls for service, maintaining communication with field personnel, and documenting incidents in accordance with departmental policies and applicable laws.

The Dispatcher is expected to remain calm under pressure, exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, and provide exceptional customer service to students, faculty, staff, visitors, and outside public safety agencies.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Qualifications:

A high school diploma/GED and some experience in customer service, communications, dispatch, public safety, emergency services, law enforcement, or administrative support are required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of modern public safety dispatching procedures and radio communications.

  • Knowledge of GCIC/NCIC rules, regulations, and security requirements.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and general computer operations.

  • Ability to learn and effectively use Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD), Records Management Systems (RMS), camera systems, access control systems, and other public safety technologies.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to communicate clearly over radio and telephone systems.

  • Ability to accurately gather information during emergency situations.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make rapid decisions under stressful conditions.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple incidents while maintaining composure.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officers, university personnel, students, and the public.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.

  • Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records.

  • Strong customer service skills.

  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing operational needs.

  • Ability to remain seated for extended periods while operating multiple computer monitors and communications equipment.

  • Ability to hear and distinguish radio and telephone communications.

  • Ability to speak clearly and effectively using telephone and radio systems.
