Job Description

The Human Resource Business Partner with a Leaves & Disability focus is responsible the ongoing administration and management of all Cando’s leaves and disability programs in Canada and the US. This role works closely with employees, site leaders, healthcare providers and insurers by delivering comprehensive, progressive, and supportive case management occupational and non-occupational claims including the development and guidance of return-to-work plans.

The HRBP Leaves & Disability Specialist is an integral member of the Human Resources team proactively handling claims management by evaluating medical information and job duties, developing case management and return to employment plans during periods of disability.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Administer and facilitate the completion and submission of timely applications for leave and disability claims with a focus on fair resolution
  • Review leave requests and supporting documentation for completeness and eligibility
  • Lead recovery planning by identifying medical and non-medical factors, functional capabilities, and return-to-work readiness
  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with employees, healthcare providers, insurance companies and government agencies to ensure smooth and effective processing of disability claims
  • Maintain regular communication with employees and business partners, communicate with clarity, guiding employees through their absence and return-to-work
  • Review medical records and communicate with healthcare providers, insurance companies and government agencies to gather necessary information
  • Monitor claim progress and maintain accurate records and documentation
  • Ensure compliance with applicable workers’ compensation legislation and organizational policies
  • Monitor claims costs, trends and performance metrics, prepare reports as required
  • Ensure all leave and disability management materials including guides, forms and template letters are current and accurate
  • Assist Site Leads by identifying any potential employment issues related to absences
  • Perform the general duties of an HRBP
  • Support HR initiatives and projects as required
  • Promote best practices that support employee wellness, early intervention

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong care management and case management background
  • Well versed in worker’s compensation legislation, FMLA, and various State leaves
  • Ability to work collaboratively with sites and present a consultative solutions-based mindset
  • Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills in developing and maintaining positive relationships with employees, healthcare providers, insurance companies and government agencies
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and critical decision-making skills
  • Effective planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Resilience and adaptability in fast-paced, emotionally complex situations
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, UKG, Claims management systems
  • Team player with the ability to work independently and manage a caseload
  • The ability to maintain, in strictest confidence, information received concerning confidential matters

Education & Experience

  • Bilingualism in French and English
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive, professional experience in leaves and disability case management such as WCB and legislative leaves in Canada and FMLA, State leaves, and worker’s compensation in the US
  • Post Secondary degree/diploma in Human Resources, Disability Management, or a related field
  • Proven experience as a leaves and disability case manager or in a similar role in both Canada and the US
  • Knowledge of federal, provincial and state leaves and disability laws and regulations
  • Experience or training in one of the following fields would be an asset; health and wellness, disability and life or health insurance, injury claims, or customer service
