Job description

The Berg Group is looking for a Traveling General Superintendent to join our team! Summary 

The General Superintendent has multiple job site responsibilities and oversees the management of the day-to-day commercial construction operations (Drywall, Paint, Plaster, Acoustical Ceilings, DIRTT) performed by The Berg Group. The General Superintendent leads a team of Supervisors and Foremen (and indirectly field laborers) to safely construct and exceed production goals, set by the project team.  

The General Superintendent is key in bridging communication between the Project Manager and the field teams. The General Superintendent is responsible for ensuring all projects are staffed accordingly to meet the project schedule. Safety, Production, Quality, and Craftsmanship are top priorities for General Superintendents, as they deliver on core services and set The Berg Group up to continuing relationships with the client onto the next job site.  

Essential Functions 

Preconstruction/Estimating/Sales 

  • An active participant in all preconstruction meetings with assigned Foreman and Project Team.  

  • Sign off on all PDP for every project. 

  • Review site conditions before mobilization to ensure efficiency during construction and make necessary recommendations to client. 

  • Communicate with General Contractor(s) and other trades to develop team relationships and to ensure project schedule and production goals are met. 

  • Identify and resolve risks (i.e., need for lifts, tying off, etc.) 

  • Initial material order at pre-con when reviewing job; subsequent material orders are executed by the Foreman. 

  • Identify and work with the Project Manager(s) team to proactively resolve any bid production discrepancies; buy into bid productions and convey that to the Foreman.  

  • Educate and facilitate field teams on the creation and execution of project delivery plans. 

Production/Execution 

  • Manages Foreman team(s) and holds them accountable to The Berg Group’s stated production goals for that project.  

  • Review of daily/weekly production tracking to determine if bid levels by activity are being hit.  

  • Keep project team(s) informed daily, as to accurate productions and other relevant field conditions observed in job walks to best manage client/general contractor relationships.  

  • Review work in progress, on all projects, and ensure it meets The Berg Group’s Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards.  

  • Weekly meeting with Project Manager(s) as it relates to job tracking, percent complete, and what scopes are complete (i.e., informs needed workforce adjustments).  

  • Safety and Superintendent audits are performed regularly in coordination with Safety teams’ onsite visits and follow-ups. 

  • Help review and streamline all The Berg Group’s services onsite to be as efficient as possible.  

  • Maintains robust technology knowledge on Paycom and other tools pushed out to connect field and project management as well as hire and onboard talent.  

  • Champions/trains foreman team on the job, safety, technology, hiring practices, etc.  

Field Management 

  • Multi-site responsibility and oversight of commercial construction operations. 

  • Management of a Foreman team of (5-15) and up to 150 field employees. 

  • Co-manage warehouse personnel and related logistics. 

  • Identify, recruit, and develop future field leaders within the Berg Team. 

  • Mentor and encourage the growth of all employees and build morale on project sites with positive reinforcement and feedback.  

  • Actively oversees and coaches’ Foreman around project budget, material purchasing, and workforce planning. 

  • Assist Foreman in identifying best practices in job sequencing and speaks on behalf of The Berg Group to clients and general contractors as needed.  

  • Regularly shares accurate job site progress with Foreman; motivates them to push their teams and ultimately exceeds bid profit through visibility.

  • Establishes and achieves specific, measurable, and obtainable objectives that support Berg's overall growth and profitability objectives while creating client, employee, and company success.  

Experience and Qualifications 

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Knowledge of all core service offerings: Drywall (layout – framing – hanging), Paint, Plaster, and Acoustical Ceilings. Specialty knowledge of one of Berg’s offerings is extremely helpful.  

  • Has proven job progression from foreman to superintendent.  

  • Maintains confidentiality and leadership in all aspects of the role.  

  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, groups, and one-on-one situations.  

  • Detail-oriented, thorough, and production/goal-driven. 

  • Ability to proactively (and reactively) solve operational problems to increase production.  

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced work environment. 

  • Ability to read and comprehend construction documents and blueprints.  

  • Keen ability to accurately articulate work direction and delegate to trusted 

subleaders/employees.  

  • Computer skills; proficient in MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Outlook, and document editing software (e.g., Paycom, PlanGrid, ProCore, iPad, PC, etc.). 

  • Weekly payroll responsibility for assigned region/projects.  

Preferred Qualifications  

  • 10+ years of related experience in the construction field; or an equivalent mix of education and field experience. 

  • 5+ years of supervisory experience.  

  • Previously held foreman and/or safety officer role(s).  

  • Detail-oriented, deadline/goal-driven. 

  • Industry knowledge in Drywall, Steel Stud Metal Framing, Paint, or other product/service that is core to Berg's offerings. 

Sedentary Work 

  • Involves lifting no more than 10 pounds at a time and occasionally lifting or carrying articles like docket files, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.  

  • Administration and recordkeeping –timecards, change orders, material delivery, truck tickets, plan review/verification, scheduling, equipment rental/return, etc. 

  • On-site traffic control vehicle/equipment: monitoring, tracking, counting, directing, coordination. 

  • On-going training and education at home or work location. 

  • On-the-job task and equipment training. 

  • In-person and classroom safety training. 

  • Online safety training. 

  • Fire watch.  

  • Flagger and flagging tasks.  

  • Parts/materials/tools/equipment delivery and/or pickup –assisted lifting, no load/unload. 

  • Pump watch for dewatering operations. 

  • Spotter for vehicles and equipment –utility, overhead lines, backing/close maneuvering, etc.  

  • SWPPP observations. 

  • Utility damage prevention observations, ticket verification/update, locate requests, locate meets. 

Travel 

  • Up to 20% primarily in their designated Market. 

  • Ability to complete regular day travel for site visits and client meetings.
