Job description

Infrastructure Automation and IaC Engineer – Colorado Springs, CO / Huntsville, AL or DC/N Virginia

About the Job

At cb5, we are on a mission to find exceptional talent. Our tight-knit organization is led by five brothers, each technology leaders in their respective technical fields and driven to foster a culture of excellence through solidarity. We are seeking an Infrastructure Automation and IaC Engineer to build the automation foundation for a greenfield Department of Defense hybrid multi-cloud program. This team is on the front lines, shaping the systems that protect us from advanced threats. We are looking for highly motivated, results-oriented professionals who thrive on solving complex technical challenges in a dynamic environment.

The Infrastructure Automation and IaC Engineer owns the Terraform and Ansible standard the entire program builds against. You will write the reusable modules, pipeline patterns and guardrails that let the Infrastructure, Identity, Network, Cybersecurity, Data and Applications, and Migration teams deliver the same way on every platform, rather than each team solving provisioning on its own. The work spans Azure Government, AWS GovCloud and on-premises VMware Cloud Foundation, in secure and at times disconnected environments. This is a hands-on engineering seat. The Automation and AI Lead sets direction and governance for the automation capability, and this position writes the code that makes the standard real.

This is a full time position working onsite in either Colorado Springs, CO or Huntsville, AL, requiring less than 10% travel.

Key Responsibilities

The candidate will:

  • Build and maintain the Infrastructure as Code standard for the program, including the reusable Terraform and Ansible module library every workstream consumes.
  • Write production automation for provisioning and configuration across Azure Government, AWS GovCloud and on-premises VMware Cloud Foundation.
  • Establish pipeline patterns for infrastructure delivery, including source control, branching, code review, automated testing and promotion between environments.
  • Build IaC guardrails, including policy as code, state management, secrets handling and drift detection.
  • Automate security hardening and compliance, including STIG application, configuration baselines and evidence collection that supports accreditation.
  • Automate landing zone build-out and repeatable environment stand-up so new enclaves are delivered consistently.
  • Support the Identity, Network, Cybersecurity, Data and Applications, and Migration teams in adopting the standard, and review the automation those teams produce.
  • Build automation supporting migration waves, including discovery, provisioning and post-move validation.
  • Partner with the ServiceNow Architect so orchestration and self-service requests execute against the same automation library.
  • Maintain documentation, module references and working examples so engineers across the program can consume the automation without direct support.
  • Troubleshoot and sustain automation in production, and improve the reliability of the pipelines the program depends on.
  • The successful candidate will:
  • Be a strong innovator in process improvement and system design.
  • Be able to quickly learn challenging concepts, decompose difficult service problems and provide resolution.
  • Be able to create and follow standard processes and clearly document results.
  • Effectively function as self-starter and identify risks, issues, and opportunities to leadership.
  • Have excellent presentation, oral and written skills to facilitate effective and efficient interchanges with senior customer management and customers.
  • This role offers the opportunity to build the automation foundation for a greenfield hybrid multi-cloud environment in support of defense, intelligence and enterprise modernization programs.

Qualifications

  • Must have 8, or more, years of infrastructure engineering experience, with 5, or more, years focused on automation and Infrastructure as Code
  • Must have 3, or more, years building and maintaining Terraform in a production environment
  • Hands-on experience authoring reusable Ansible roles and playbooks for configuration management and system hardening.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure delivery (GitLab, ArgoCD, Jenkins, etc.).
  • Experience automating across more than one platform, such as Azure, AWS and VMware.
  • Experience with Git-based workflows, branching, code review and release practices applied to infrastructure code.
  • Proficiency with at least one scripting language (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
  • Experience with infrastructure testing and validation, such as linting, policy as code and automated compliance checks.
  • Working knowledge of networking, storage, identity services, and Linux and Windows administration.
  • Experience automating security hardening and compliance in a regulated or DoD environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document standards other engineers follow.
  • Must meet DoD 8570 certification requirements (e.g. Sec+) within 60 days of hire.
  • Must have an active DoD Secret Security Clearance, or be eligible to obtain one.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have an active DoD Secret Security Clearance or Top-Secret Security Clearance with SCI eligibility
  • Have a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field
  • Have 1, or more, automation or cloud certifications (e.g, HashiCorp Certified Terraform Associate, Red Hat Certified Specialist in Ansible Automation, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Azure Administrator Associate).
  • Have experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or Federal cloud initiatives.
  • Have experience automating in air-gapped or disconnected environments.
  • Have experience with VMware Cloud Foundation automation (VCF Automation, Aria, or vRealize).
  • Have experience with Kubernetes, HELM and container registries.
  • Have experience with ServiceNow integration or automation triggered from ITSM workflows.
  • Have experience working in an agile environment.
