Director Typography information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director of Typography, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director of Typography, you need deep expertise in type design, visual communication, and a background in graphic design or a related field. Mastery of industry-standard design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with font management and production tools are typically required. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to articulate design concepts effectively help set outstanding candidates apart. These skills ensure the creation of visually compelling, consistent, and brand-appropriate typographic solutions that enhance overall design impact.

How does a Director of Typography typically collaborate with design, marketing, and product teams to ensure cohesive visual communication?

A Director of Typography works closely with cross-functional teams, such as design, marketing, and product development, to establish and maintain typographic standards across all brand touchpoints. They often lead workshops, review creative assets, and provide guidance on type selection, hierarchy, and accessibility to ensure consistency and clarity. Effective communication and coordination are vital, as this role bridges creative vision with practical execution, often mediating between artistic intent and technical constraints. Collaborative feedback sessions and documentation of typographic guidelines help ensure that all teams are aligned with the brand’s visual identity.

What does a Director of Typography do?

A Director of Typography oversees the design, selection, and implementation of typefaces across a company's branding and communication materials. They set typographic standards, guide teams in best practices, and ensure consistency in visual language. This role often involves collaborating with graphic designers, marketing teams, and creative directors to maintain a cohesive and effective typographic identity. Directors of Typography may also research emerging trends and technologies in typography to keep their organization at the forefront of design innovation.

Job description

Haus is seeking an experienced Art Director to join our Los Angeles team. In this role, you will own the visual direction of projects from concept through delivery, working closely with Creative Directors and collaborating across design, motion, and development. The ideal candidate brings a strong design sensibility, proven experience across digital touchpoints, and the confidence to lead creative conversations with clients.
Requirements
What you'll do:
  • Own the visual direction of projects - developing style treatments, design systems, and creative frameworks that set the standard for the whole team
  • Collaborate with CDs and ECDs to shape creative strategy and translate briefs into compelling visual ideas
  • Present and defend creative decisions to clients with clarity and confidence
  • Direct and give feedback to Senior Designers and Designers on your projects
  • Bring a strong UI and motion sensibility to everything you make - knowing how digital experiences move and behave, not just how they look

What you'll bring:
  • 5+ years of experience in design, with a strong portfolio of digital-first work
  • Fluency in Figma and Adobe CC Suite
  • A strong eye for layout, typography, and brand expression across digital formats
  • Experience with style treatments, storyboards, moodboards, and campaign concepting
  • Understanding of UI/UX principles, responsive design, and how animation can enhance digital experiences
  • Confidence presenting to and collaborating with clients
  • A collaborative, ego-free approach to making work better

Benefits
We're a digital design studio in Los Angeles built on the belief that creativity and technology are better together. Our team is diverse, multidisciplinary, and deeply invested in the craft. We work with brands across industries, from emerging startups to household names, on projects that push what digital can do.
If you're looking for a place where your ideas are heard, your growth is supported, and the work actually matters-we'd love to meet you.
The estimated compensation for this position is $90k-$120k per year, plus a 401k, medical, dental, vision, life and optional benefits, paid time off, fun events and more.
