About the Opportunity / A Day in the Life

This is a unique hybrid role that blends hands-on patient care with technical histology work in a fast-paced dermatology setting. You'll split your time between assisting providers during procedures and preparing tissue samples critical to accurate diagnosis-particularly within a Mohs surgery environment.

On the clinical side, you'll work closely with dermatology providers, preparing patients, assisting with procedures like biopsies and excisions, and supporting post-procedure care. You'll play a key role in keeping clinic flow efficient while ensuring patients feel informed and cared for throughout their visit.

In the lab, you'll handle tissue specimens with precision-processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining samples for pathology review. Your attention to detail directly impacts diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both patient interaction and technical lab work, and thrives in a setting where both skill sets are used daily.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Hybrid clinical + lab role-variety in your day-to-day work
  • Direct involvement in Mohs procedures and dermatologic care
  • Strong collaboration with dermatology providers and clinical teams
  • Consistent weekly structure despite multi-site rotation
  • Hands-on histology experience without certification requirements
  • Opportunity to deepen expertise in a specialized, high-demand field

What We're Looking For

  • 1-2+ years of Mohs clinic histotechnology experience required
  • Comfortable balancing patient care and lab responsibilities
  • Detail-oriented with strong manual dexterity
  • Organized and able to manage workflow across multiple sites
  • Team-oriented with strong communication skills

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical / Medical Assistant Duties

  • Prepare patients for dermatology exams and procedures
  • Record medical histories, vitals, and patient information
  • Assist providers with procedures (biopsies, excisions, Mohs cases)
  • Apply dressings, medications, and provide wound care
  • Educate patients on post-procedure care and treatment plans
  • Maintain clean, organized exam rooms and sterilize instruments
  • Support scheduling, documentation, and EMR workflows

Histotechnician Duties

  • Prepare, process, and embed tissue specimens
  • Perform microtomy (sectioning) and staining (H&E, special stains)
  • Ensure specimen integrity and accurate labeling
  • Operate and maintain histology lab equipment
  • Follow lab safety, quality control, and compliance standards
  • Document specimen processing and communicate with providers

Required Qualifications

  • 1-2+ years of Mohs clinic histotechnology experience
  • Experience performing microtomy and histology prep
  • Strong understanding of dermatologic procedures
  • Ability to work across both clinical and lab environments

Preferred Background

  • Associate degree in Medical Assisting, Histotechnology, or related field
  • Certification (CMA, RMA, HT/HTL ASCP) preferred but not required
  • Dermatology clinic experience beyond Mohs
  • Familiarity with EMR and lab information systems

This Role Is Likely a Fit If You...

  • Enjoy both patient-facing care and technical lab work
  • Have Mohs experience and want to stay in a specialized setting
  • Are detail-oriented and take pride in precision work
  • Thrive in a structured but dynamic, multi-site environment
  • Like being an integral part of both clinical and diagnostic workflows

This Role May Not Be a Fit If You...

  • Prefer strictly clinical or strictly lab-based roles (not both)
  • Are not comfortable traveling between clinic locations
  • Prefer a slower-paced or low-volume environment
  • Do not have prior Mohs histology experience
  • Prefer minimal procedural involvement

Why Join Us

This role offers the opportunity to be deeply involved in both sides of dermatologic care-supporting patients directly while also contributing to the diagnostic process behind the scenes. You'll work closely with experienced providers in a collaborative environment where your skillset has a clear and immediate impact.

If you're looking for a role that combines variety, specialization, and hands-on work in a respected dermatology setting, this is a strong next step.
