This role is being created to support a multi-year transformational project at Amtrak, as support for normal department operations. As this position is tied to that project work, continuation of work after completion of the project would depend on business needs at that time.

Job Summary

Serves as the Company's internal technical accounting expert and leader of the function, providing guidance on complex and non-routine transactions. Oversees implementation of new accounting standards, manages the Senior Manager of Technical Accounting, and ensures consistent application of accounting policies. Partners with cross-functional and senior leadership on accounting implications of strategic initiatives and leads support for the annual audit, including documentation and communication of key accounting conclusions to external auditors.

  • Provide authoritative technical accounting guidance on complex, non-routine transactions and emerging business matters
  • Lead the evaluation, interpretation, and implementation of new accounting standards across the organization
  • Oversee and develop the technical accounting function, including management of the Senior Manager of Technical Accounting
  • Partner with cross-functional teams and senior leadership on accounting implications of strategic initiatives and transaction
  • Coordination with external auditors, including supporting the annual audit and documenting key accounting conclusions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Accounting
  • CPA
  • 5+ years of technical accounting experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in accounting.
  • 5 years' public accounting experience.
  • Experience writing technical accounting memos.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced technical accounting expertise (U.S. GAAP), including strong research, interpretation, and documentation skills
  • Strong communication skills to clearly explain complex accounting concepts to non-finance stakeholders and external auditors
  • Judgment and problem-solving ability to analyze complex, non-routine transactions and develop defensible accounting conclusions
  • Project management capability to lead accounting standard implementations and manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Collaboration and business partnering skills to work cross-functionally with legal, FP&A, Treasury and operations, etc.
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical skills to ensure accuracy and consistency in accounting policies and reporting
  • Experience working with external auditors and supporting financial statement audits

The salary/hourly range is $163,000.00 - $211,140.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
