Job description

Staff Accountant – Temporary

Location: Washington, DC

Duration: Approximately 3 months

Estimated Start Date: August 31, 2026

Schedule: Hybrid – 2 days onsite per week preferred

Experience: Open to junior to mid-level candidates

Industry: Nonprofit preferred


Green Key is partnering with a respected nonprofit organization in Washington, DC to identify a Staff Accountant for a temporary assignment. This role will provide hands-on support across accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, reconciliations, general ledger, and month-end close. This opportunity may be a great fit for a more junior accounting professional with solid experience in Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable who is looking to expand their accounting experience.


Key Responsibilities

  • Accounts Payable & Expense Management
  • Process vendor invoices, employee reimbursements, and weekly payments.
  • Maintain accurate vendor records and supporting documentation.
  • Reconcile corporate credit card activity.
  • Support expense management system administration, training, and employee questions.

Payroll, Cash & Treasury

  • Coordinate biweekly payroll in partnership with the People & Culture team.
  • Prepare payroll-related journal entries.
  • Reconcile cash and investment accounts.
  • Process bank activity, transfers, and related transactions.
  • Maintain accurate cash and accounts receivable records.

General Ledger & Month-End Close

  • Prepare journal entries and reconcile assigned general ledger accounts.
  • Reconcile intercompany accounts, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Support the month-end close process and ensure financial information is accurate and timely.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial statements and related schedules.

Audit & Compliance

  • Support year-end close activities.
  • Assist with external audits, including preparation of schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with Form 990 preparation and related financial documentation.

Finance & Grant Support

  • Assist with grant reporting and related financial requirements.
  • Support budgeting and forecasting activities as needed.
  • Assist with special projects and other Finance initiatives.
  • Cross-train with other members of the Finance team to provide broader departmental coverage.


Qualifications

  • Accounting experience with a focus on Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
  • Open to junior-level candidates who have strong AP/AR experience and are looking to grow their accounting skill set.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred but not required.
  • Experience with reconciliations, journal entries, or month-end close is a plus.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred but not required.
  • Grant accounting or reporting experience is a plus.
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a Finance team.
  • Ability and willingness to work onsite in Washington, DC, two days per week is preferred.
