Job description

The Bowery Mission is a Christian, faith-based organization committed since the 1870s to serving people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. The Bowery Mission meets essential needs and creates transformative communities with men, women, children, and families in New York so that we can together overcome homelessness and poverty and flourish. 


The Director, Finance, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, is responsible for the financial operations of Christian Herald Association (CHA) and its subsidiaries. CHA is d/b/a The Bowery Mission (TBM). The Director, Finance ensures all Expenses, Fixed Assets Capital Expenditures and related Work-in-Progress and related Accounts Payables, Bill.com Payables and Spend & Expense, Budgets, Forecasts, Departmental Expense and P&L reporting, preparation of P&L’s by Location, Project, Grant and Program and Statistical accounts and metrics are maintained and reconciled.


Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversees the process of all payables and bi-weekly payroll. Sync with Bill.com and Fixed Asset Ledger.
  • Ensures timely reporting and that proper systems and reporting are in place for A/P, cash management, as well as all aspects of payroll, benefit and tax expenses. Also monitors departmental expense results and reclassifications.
  • Analyzes financial data and presents financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicates monthly, quarterly, and annual financial results; monitors progress and changes and keeps senior leadership abreast of CHA’s financial status. 
  • Participates in the annual budgeting process which provides management information for executive decision making.
  • Reviews, and interprets financial/budget reports, working with CFO and leadership during the strategic and budget planning process.
  • Works closely with program leaders and their staffs, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures, but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.
  • Ensures systems and processes are in place to gather and monitor financial data in preparation and for annual audit, Form 990 tax filings, 1099 generation and 5500 filings. 
  • Guiding and mentoring engineers while nurturing a collaborative environment that encourages innovation, creativity and data integrity.
  • Collaborating with key stakeholders to create a strategy that aligns seamlessly with overarching business objectives, ensuring the initiatives directly contribute to organizational success.
  • Establishing and utilizing metrics to evaluate information processes and team performance, allowing for continuous improvement and optimization of engineering efforts.


Requirements:

  • Embrace the organization’s Statement of Faith.
  • At least 5-10 years senior experience, including supervisory role with financial oversight responsibilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in Accounting.
  • Experience with non-profit accounting and donation processing.
  • Highly experienced in Payroll. 
  • Exceptional computer skills – Microsoft Office.

Preferred:

  • Experience with systems including Bamboo HR, Bill.com, Salesforce, ExpensePath, Sage Intacct.


Salary commensurate with relevant education & experience: $115,000 - $125,000 annually.
