The Role and Why It's Important

As a Sushi Clerk at Hy-Vee, you'll be a key part of our Hy-Chi department, helping fill customer orders, prepare fresh product, and keep the department running smoothly every day. Your attention to food safety, freshness, and customer service makes a real difference in the experience our customers have every time they visit.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting customers warmly, learning their names, and going the extra mile to make every visit a positive one

  • Take customer orders at the counter and over the phone, and assist customers with finding products, reaching items, and carrying heavy purchases

  • Review daily orders and monitor product freshness, appearance, and supply levels throughout your shift

  • Prepare, finish, and replenish product as needed, pulling items from the cooler or freezer for preparation

  • Follow and maintain proper sanitation procedures, keeping your work area clean and organized at all times

  • Check in product, put product away, label and date items accurately, and remove trash promptly

  • Anticipate daily product needs and follow or develop a production list to stay ahead

  • Order product and supplies as necessary

  • Work alongside your teammates to ensure a smooth, positive experience for every customer

  • Maintain compliance with Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all company policies

  • Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as needed

  • You'll receive direction and support from: Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home, Food Service Director, Hy-Chi Department Manager, Assistant Hy-Chi Department Manager, and Service Managers

Your Skills

To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:

  • Follow written and verbal instructions with confidence

  • Use basic math skills for simple addition, subtraction, counting, and recording

  • Communicate clearly with customers and teammates in a friendly, helpful way

  • Stay organized and keep up with the pace of a busy department

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Food Safety Certification required; six months or more of similar or related experience preferred

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home, Food Service Director, Hy-Chi Department Manager, Assistant Hy-Chi Department Manager, and Service Managers

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Food Safety Certification required

  • Six months of similar or related experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This is a fast-paced role with significant activity throughout your shift. You may encounter continuous exposure to raw fish, flour, dust, noise, and temperature extremes, with occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
