Job description

Executive Director, Biostatistics

Location: Boston, MA (Hybrid – onsite required)

General Summary:

The Executive Director of Biostatistics is a strategic, dynamic, and empowered leader overseeing statistical functions in support of multiple therapeutic areas or portfolios. The incumbent is responsible for the methodological and quantitative scientific contributions of their group while simultaneously driving operational excellence. This is a highly visible and collaborative role, managing a team of 4–5 direct reports and partnering extensively across R&D functions to generate evidence in support of the company's pipeline and products.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and drive scientific statistical methodological expertise to impact the portfolio through application of both best-in-class and novel statistical approaches as part of unified Development strategies, including oversight of quantitative methods deployed across the portfolio with an eye toward efficiency and innovation.
  • Serve as subject matter expert and owner, where appropriate, for key biometrics processes and associated operating model(s) related to Biostatistics SOPs, process maps, training, and software/tools.
  • Own statistical support across assigned therapeutic areas and/or Global Medical Affairs, including early/late clinical development, post-marketing studies, RWE studies, and/or analyses supporting reimbursement.
  • Drive innovative trial designs in a complex, fast-changing environment to improve trial efficiency and shape the views of the executive team on important matters.
  • Directly manage and develop a team of 4–5 biostatisticians, fostering growth, accountability, and high performance.
  • Serve as a key leader on the Biostatistics Leadership Team, helping set and drive vision and execution with respect to data operations, statistics, and statistical reporting/analytics.
  • Act as a critical cross-functional partner, collaborating closely with Clinical Development, Regulatory, Data Management, Medical Affairs, and other R&D functions to ensure aligned, evidence-based decision-making.
  • Represent the organization externally, demonstrating scientific leadership and engaging in industry, academic, and regulatory forums as appropriate.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Outstanding communication skills, including clarity in scientific/technical/process writing, influential speech, negotiation, and the ability to explain complex concepts to varied audiences.
  • Proven, hands-on experience building, leading, and developing high-performing teams — this is a people-management role first, requiring direct oversight of staff performance, development, and engagement.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, with demonstrated success partnering across clinical, regulatory, and commercial functions.
  • Expert-level statistical methodology knowledge, including best practices and emerging industry trends; an agile learner and change agent.
  • Executive presence and a high degree of emotional intelligence.

Education and Experience:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Statistics or Biostatistics.
  • 15+ years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Arrangement:

  • Hybrid schedule with required onsite presence in the Boston area.
