What is a director software?

A Director of Software is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the software development teams and guiding the strategic direction of software projects within an organization. They manage engineering managers and developers, set technical vision, ensure projects are aligned with business goals, and often collaborate with other departments like product management and operations. The role requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to balance innovation with operational efficiency. Directors of Software are also tasked with recruiting top talent, mentoring team members, and ensuring software quality and security standards are met.

What are some typical challenges a director of software faces when leading cross-functional teams?

A Director of Software often encounters challenges such as aligning priorities across engineering, product, and design teams, ensuring clear communication, and managing competing deadlines. Job description

BIS Safety Software is a SaaS company on a mission to change how organizations manage safety, learning, and compliance. Our websites drive a huge share of our leads and revenue, and we're looking for a Web Optimization Lead to own how well they perform.

About the Role:

In this role, you'll own the performance of our web properties end to end, from our marketing site to our eCommerce course store: how effectively they capture leads, how they rank in organic and AI-driven search, and how smoothly visitors move from first click through to purchase. You'll set the quality bar for everything that goes live and turn strategy into a roadmap our team can build against.

You'll identify and fix the real source of site issues, whether that's speed, broken conversion paths, or indexing errors, not just the immediate symptom. You'll set the priorities and standards our web team and external partners work to, review what they produce before it ships, and stay hands-on with the technically difficult pieces: doing them yourself when it matters, or supervising them closely enough to know they were done right. Our marketing site runs on WordPress; our course store runs on a proprietary eCommerce platform.

The candidates who thrive here have run or owned a website's performance before, ideally with e-commerce attached, and want real autonomy: a roadmap agreed up front, a performance readout you own and run, and the room to deliver against it.

This is an in-person role based out of our Sherwood Park, Alberta office.

In this role, you'll be expected to:
  • Optimize landing pages and entry points so more incoming traffic converts into leads, partnering with our paid media team to lift landing page performance for ad traffic
  • Grow organic search performance and build visibility in AI-driven search (AEO / GEO), improving rankings and technical site health over time
  • Smooth the path to purchase, from entry through checkout, across our public-facing e-commerce experience
  • Own the web quality bar: catch broken CTAs, image issues, and content errors, monitor site health, uphold our brand standards on the web, and set the templates and standards others build to
  • Build a strategic web roadmap and break it into two-week sprints and task-level assignments
  • Direct and QC our web team and external partners against clear priorities, reviewing work before it goes live
  • Handle or closely supervise the technically difficult, senior-level pieces, staying hands-on enough to judge quality and effort honestly
  • Generate effective, ongoing reporting that provides performance overviews and informs strategic priorities
  • Scope project work and identify resource requirements, validating estimates from internal teams and external partners
  • Diagnose site health with real diagnostic tools and propose concrete, repeatable fixes rather than one-off patches
You might be the right fit if you:
  • Run or own the performance of a website, and have for 5+ years, ideally one with e-commerce attached
  • Have built front-end experiences to a quality standard, understanding best practice even if you're not writing the code yourself day to day
  • Run conversion rate optimization and split or A/B testing that produces measurable, provable improvement
  • Improve SEO, ranking, and quality score, and can speak fluently about diagnosing site health
  • Set direction and a quality standard for other people's work without needing formal authority to do it
  • Back your calls with data and evidence, and persuade with results rather than opinion
  • Thrive on autonomy: give you a roadmap and a reporting cadence you own, and you run with it
  • Do this in a B2B or SaaS context, where the lead is the conversion
Qualifications we are looking for:
  • 5+ years running, operating, or owning the performance of a website
  • Working knowledge of WordPress: comfortable in the CMS, able to fix on-page issues yourself and judge the quality of work built on it
  • A track record of implementation work you did yourself, not just directed
  • Demonstrated results: measurable improvements to conversion, traffic, or search performance you can point to
Bonus points if you have:
  • Hands-on e-commerce platform optimization
  • Demonstrated AEO / GEO results, not just familiarity
  • Put AI tools to work in your own workflow: analysis, QA, content, or development
  • HubSpot or marketing automation familiarity
  • Content or content strategy experience
Compensation and benefits:
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • Full medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Life insurance and disability insurance
  • Health spending account
  • Flexible working hours
  • On-the-job training and growth opportunities
  • Free on-site parking
$75,000 - $95,000 a year
Salary ranges are based on experience, reflecting the unique skillset each individual brings to the role.
