What does a director of safety and security do?

A Director of Safety and Security is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing policies and procedures that ensure the safety and security of an organization’s employees, assets, and operations. This role often involves risk assessments, emergency preparedness, compliance with laws and regulations, and coordination with law enforcement agencies. The Director may also manage a team of security personnel and provide training to staff on safety protocols. The primary goal is to create a safe environment while minimizing risks to the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director of safety and security?

To thrive as a Director of Safety and Security, you need in-depth knowledge of safety regulations, risk management, incident response, and typically a degree in criminal justice, safety management, or a related field. Expertise in security systems, emergency management software, and certifications like CPP (Certified Protection Professional) or OSHA are often required. Leadership, strategic thinking, and strong communication are vital soft skills for effectively guiding teams and collaborating across departments. These competencies are essential to ensure a secure environment, regulatory compliance, and swift response to emerging threats.

Directors of Safety and Security often coordinate with multiple departments, such as operations, HR, and legal, to implement comprehensive safety protocols. One common challenge is ensuring consistent communication and buy-in from all stakeholders, especially when policies impact workflow or require additional training. Balancing regulatory compliance with operational efficiency can also be demanding, as can staying updated on evolving security threats.
