What is a safety?

A Safety job involves identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks to ensure a safe working environment. Professionals in this field develop and enforce safety policies, conduct inspections, and provide training to prevent accidents and injuries. They may work in various industries, including construction, manufacturing, and healthcare. Compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations is a key aspect of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a safety position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Safety role, you need a solid understanding of occupational health and safety principles, hazard identification, and regulatory compliance, often backed by a relevant degree or certification such as OSHA, CSP, or NEBOSH. Familiarity with audit tools, risk assessment software, and incident reporting systems is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills help you effectively promote safety culture and engage with all levels of staff. These abilities are vital for minimizing workplace risks, ensuring compliance, and maintaining a safe environment for employees.

What are some typical challenges faced in a safety role and how can they be addressed?

Safety professionals often encounter challenges such as gaining employee buy-in for safety protocols, staying updated on changing regulations, and managing incident investigations. Overcoming these requires consistent communication, ongoing training, and a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks. Building strong relationships with staff and management can also enhance collaboration and foster a positive safety culture. Leveraging technology for tracking hazards and compliance can make the role more efficient, and ongoing professional development ensures you stay current with best practices in the field.

Job description

Bonneville Contracting & Technology Group is seeking a Safety Manager to oversee and support workplace safety across our operations in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This is a mid-level position for a hands-on safety professional capable of working directly with field personnel, Project Managers, clients, and government representatives.

Bonneville performs electrical, telecommunications, fiber-optic, low-voltage, security, and infrastructure construction for commercial, industrial, utility, and federal clients throughout Puerto Rico and the USVI.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and enforce Bonneville's safety policies across active projects in Puerto Rico and the USVI.
  • Conduct regular jobsite inspections, safety audits, and field observations.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EM 385-1-1, federal, territorial, client, and company safety requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs/AHAs), safety plans, inspection reports, training records, and incident documentation.
  • Conduct toolbox talks, employee orientations, and safety training.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and coordinate corrective actions with Project Managers and field supervisors.
  • Investigate incidents and near misses and recommend preventive measures.
  • Monitor compliance with PPE, fall protection, electrical safety, excavation, confined-space, equipment, and other applicable construction requirements.
  • Coordinate with general contractors, government agencies, and client safety personnel.
  • Support the continued development of Bonneville's company-wide safety program and culture.
  • Travel between project locations in Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Croix, and other USVI locations as required.

Qualifications

  • 3–7 years of construction safety experience preferred.
  • Experience in electrical, telecommunications, utilities, infrastructure, or federal construction strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA construction standards.
  • OSHA 30 certification required or ability to obtain promptly.
  • Experience with EM 385-1-1 and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requirements is highly desirable.
  • CHST, STS-C, ASP, CSP, or similar certifications are a plus.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to independently identify and address safety concerns in the field.
  • English/Spanish bilingual capability preferred.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must be willing and able to travel between Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands but the vast majority of work will be in PR.

What We Offer

Bonneville provides the opportunity to join a growing Caribbean-based contractor performing increasingly complex commercial, industrial, utility, telecommunications, and federal projects. The Safety Manager will play an important role in supporting our expanding operations across Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands while working directly with project teams and company leadership.

Competitive compensation based on experience, qualifications, and certifications.
