Role Summary
The Environmental Specialist is responsible for supporting Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) programs with a primary focus on environmental compliance in a manufacturing environment. This role ensures compliance with environmental regulations, permits, sustainability initiatives, and EHS requirements through risk identification, incident prevention, regulatory coordination, and continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will have strong environmental compliance experience while also supporting broader EHS initiatives, including training, audits, and policy implementation.
Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) requirements through inspections, hazard identification, risk assessments, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions, with emphasis on environmental compliance and sustainability.
  • Administer environmental programs including emissions control, hazardous and nonhazardous waste management, environmental permits, and regulatory reporting.
  • Lead or support sustainability initiatives such as Zero Waste, waste minimization, recycling, and environmental performance improvement programs.
  • Serve as a liaison with environmental regulatory agencies (e.g., EPA, Puerto Rico EQB/DNER, PRASA, Puerto Rico Solid Waste Authority, and applicable authorities), coordinating inspections, audits, permitting activities, environmental reporting, waste management compliance, and regulatory communications.
  • Support and maintain ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems, ensuring compliance with internal procedures, audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct EHS audits, incident investigations, root cause analysis, and environmental/occupational risk assessments to reduce workplace hazards and improve compliance.
  • Deliver EHS training programs, including new employee orientation, environmental compliance awareness, corporate policies, and proper material handling.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Facilities, and other functional teams to evaluate process changes and ensure safe, sustainable, and environmentally compliant practices.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS), with emphasis in environmental compliance.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Science, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene or related field.
  • Experience managing environmental permits and regulatory compliance activities related to air, water, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, and environmental reporting.
  • Experience interacting with environmental regulatory agencies and supporting regulatory compliance activities, including agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board (EQB) / Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER), Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA), Puerto Rico Solid Waste Authority, and similar local or federal environmental agencies.
  • Experience supporting or working within an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, including audits, compliance, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and Environmental, Health & Safety standards.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting regulated or high-risk manufacturing environments including Medical Device, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Electronics, Electromechanical, Aerospace, Industrial Manufacturing, or similar industries.
  • Experience in Medical Device manufacturing environments.
  • Experience leading or supporting sustainability initiatives such as Zero Waste, waste minimization, recycling, emissions reduction, and environmental performance improvement programs.
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 and broader EHS management systems.
  • Professional certifications related to Environmental Compliance, EHS, sustainability, OSHA, or equivalent.
