What You Will Do

This position is open for both internal and external candidates to apply.

The Product Realization and Reliability Office (PRRO) in Nuclear Production Operations comprises multidisciplinary engineers and scientists that support plutonium programs (i.e., pit production, surveillance, research & development, and subcritical experiments) across the entire Nuclear Production Operations organization.

The selected candidate will be a member of the PRRO leadership team and will be responsible for developing and maintaining a complete digital thread connecting the people, processes, and equipment supporting nuclear production. This scope covers a wide range of complex interconnected socio-technical systems and requires approaches that are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organizational objectives. The Digital Engineering Lead is accountable for completing and documenting assigned tasks within the agreed upon cost and schedule. Additionally, the selected candidate will be expected to ensure peer reviews for the team's work and to be a peer reviewer for other engineers' work.

You are expected to have a very high degree of relevant technical competence and be a recognized technical leader and the lead of a team of digital engineers. You will be required to provide technical leadership and oversight to the digital engineering team, interface with customers, and engage in strategic planning to advance LANL's capabilities. You will also be responsible for the comprehensive review and approval of all technical work produced by the engineers on your team. Mentoring of early career staff is mandatory.

Project-Program Director 4 ($170,600 - $295,400)

The Project-Program Director 4 provides leadership and management of a technically challenging portfolio, which is moderate to large in total budget and/or has strategic significance, may require multidisciplinary integration across multiple Laboratory organizations, and encompasses one or more discrete programs/projects. The PPD4 assists in developing programs/projects capabilities that support and/or diversify the Laboratory's mission and build and draw upon its technical strengths. They will assist in defining and articulating goals and in developing and executing programs/projects to support them, as well as brokering with external and internal customers to determine what work will be done to meet the customers' needs, general time-frames, and funding requirements. The Project-Program Director 4 manages direct and provides direction to deployed staff from line organizations in the planning, tracking, and execution of assigned program(s)/project(s).

What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:
  • Experience in aspects of project management of technical work, including defining work scope, schedules, budgets, priorities, and performance milestones; developing cost, scope, and schedule baselines
  • Experience with manufacturing execution systems (MES), ERP systems, and other manufacturing-oriented systems
  • Expertise in applying fundamental techniques and engineering best practices
  • Experience mentoring early career scientists and engineers
  • Strong documentation skills; demonstrated ability to document technical results in a formal method/format
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong presentation skills

Education/Experience Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Q Clearance: This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by, or on behalf of, the Federal Government for access to classified matter.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles, requirements decomposition, and V-model lifecycle approaches
  • Experience with Value Stream Mapping or Data Element Mapping & Analysis (DEMA)
  • Familiarity with Models Based Systems Engineering, SysML language is preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to analyze complex shop floor challenges and implement effective solutions.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with shop floor personnel and cross-functional teams.
  • Proactive mindset with a passion for driving continuous improvement and operational excellence in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with private industry production in highly regulated sectors (aerospace, defense, automotive, medical devices, pharmaceuticals).
  • Proficient understanding of databases and information models.
  • Familiarity with the product realization process within the nuclear security enterprise
Work Location:

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test:

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position:

Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants:

Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program:

Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
