The Operations Manager usually handles day-to-day operational tasks, process improvements, and team management within a specific department. Both roles require similar credentials like experience in operations, but the Director role often demands more extensive leadership experience and strategic skills. Employers in startups frequently use these titles interchangeably, but the scope and seniority differ significantly.

What does a Director Operations Manager do at a startup?

A Director Operations Manager at a startup oversees the daily operations and ensures that all business processes run smoothly and efficiently. They are responsible for managing teams, setting and tracking operational goals, and implementing strategies to optimize workflow and productivity. This role often involves coordinating between different departments, handling budgets, and identifying areas for improvement to support the startup's growth. Additionally, they play a key part in establishing company policies and adapting operations as the business evolves.

How does a Director Operations Manager at a startup typically balance strategic planning with hands-on problem solving?

In a startup environment, a Director Operations Manager often wears many hats, blending high-level strategic planning with direct involvement in daily operations. You'll be expected to set long-term operational goals, but also step in to troubleshoot urgent issues or streamline processes as needs arise. This dual focus requires adaptability, prioritization skills, and close collaboration with teams such as product development, sales, and finance. The dynamic nature of startups means you'll frequently shift between planning, execution, and cross-functional coordination, making time management and communication essential for success.

Since 1947, CCS has empowered many of the world’s leading organizations across sectors to advance some of the most important causes in history. We plan, manage, and implement programs and initiatives that achieve fundraising goals and mission impact. This year, we were named one of Forbes’ America’s Best Management Consulting Firms 2026, based on recommendations from clients and consulting peers.

Our people are our greatest strength. At CCS, you will join a diverse team of smart, passionate, and resourceful professionals who are driven by purpose and committed to performance.

UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE
As the Director, Operations & Change Management, you serve as the execution and adoption engine of the Transformation office, responsible for translating firm strategy into coordinated action and ensuring the organization successfully absorbs and sustains change.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Enterprise-Wide Project Orchestration
  • Manage the enterprise initiative roadmap, partnering with Operations Office leadership on prioritization, sequencing, and dependency management
  • Act as “Air Traffic Control”, ensuring the organization is not overloaded and initiatives are intentionally paced and communicated
  • Build and maintain enterprise dashboards and tracking systems to provide visibility into enterprise-wide project activity
Initiative Design & Execution Leadership
  • Own the firm’s initiative execution infrastructure (e.g., Monday.com) as the system of record
  • Partner closely with executive sponsors and strategic initiative leaders to translate enterprise priorities into coordinated execution and communications plans
  • Lead the end-to-end execution of priority initiatives, from work plan design through implementation, including building detailed project plans, timelines, ownership structures, change management strategies, communications calendars, and accountability mechanisms
  • Monitor performance, track outcomes, and lead regular executive reporting and readouts
Change Management System & Adoption Discipline

  • Experience driving change initiatives with a focus on adoption, stakeholder alignment, and measurable outcomes
  • Understanding of the nonprofit sector, fundraising, and/or professional services preferred
  • Experience collaborating with a diverse set of leaders and developing unifying solutions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience using metrics or dashboards to track performance and outcomes
  • Monday.com experience preferred
CCS offers competitive benefits, a dynamic training program, resources, career advancement, mentoring, and networking opportunities. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and strongly encourage a diverse pool of candidates to apply.
