Additionally, they often play a key role in recruitment, budgeting, and setting best practices for software development processes.

What does a director of software engineering do?

As a director of software engineering, your responsibilities are to oversee the daily operations of the software engineering department and the long-term application of strategic planning for the department. You are ultimately responsible for creating policies and objectives for the department in collaboration with other director-level positions in the company. You are also heavily involved in the department’s finances and project management, and you often oversee multiple projects. At larger companies, you may have fewer technical duties, but for small and mid-sized companies, you may code or provide technical and managerial expertise on specific projects.

What are some common challenges faced by a director of software engineering when managing cross-functional teams?

A Director of Software Engineering often manages teams composed of engineers, product managers, and designers, which can present challenges in aligning priorities and communication styles. Balancing the technical needs of the engineering team with broader business objectives requires clear communication and strong leadership. Additionally, adapting to rapidly changing technology while ensuring consistent delivery and maintaining team morale is a key challenge. Proactive stakeholder management and fostering a culture of collaboration are essential for success in this role.

Director of Engineering

Intuition Machines, Inc.

Toronto, ON • On-site

Contractor

Re-posted 8 days ago

Job description

Intuition Machines uses AI/ML to build enterprise security products. We apply our research to systems that serve hundreds of millions of people, with a team distributed around the world. You are probably familiar with our best-known product, the hCaptcha security suite. Our approach is simple: low overhead, small teams, and rapid iteration.

Our Engineering Directors are highly technical: you will need to be a domain expert in one or more areas of distributed systems, online security, and machine learning. Responsibilities include building and leading teams ensuring engineers are productive, and shipping what our customers need while maintaining high code quality, security, and service availability standards.

Using AI: Coding agents are indisputably useful tools. We provide access to the top 3 models, and were early adopters of evals-first development flows. Familiarity with coding using agents is part of all interviews. However, reliability and correctness are critical for us. You will need to read and understand every line of code with your name on it, and it will be reviewed by both people and machines.

What you'll do:
  • Recruit, motivate, lead, and manage highly technical teams focused on delivering online security and machine learning products at scale.
  • Act as a liaison between product, engineering, customers, and sales to articulate and translate both complex business requirements and technology solutions into useful products.
  • Maintain a high level of assurance and software quality standards while maintaining development velocity: availability is core to nearly every requirement.
  • Define, drive and govern automation and instrumentation to ensure we maintain high observability and automate break-fix as much as possible.
  • In partnership with sales and product teams, model go-to-market strategies for new offerings, oversee architecture, boost client acquisition capabilities, and improve delivery.
  • Put in place effective hiring and onboarding strategies.

What we're looking for:
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience leading engineering teams of 20-60 people with a strong background in security products and machine learning.
  • Familiarity with high availability and high security development processes, supported by strong knowledge of Python, NodeJS, and Go or Rust.
  • Experience and demonstrated success with DevOps/systems integration, lightweight development practices, meeting strong SLAs, test-driven design in large scale internet-facing systems.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems design on orchestration platforms like Kubernetes: queue-first architectures, sharding, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated architecture and business/product need mapping expertise (gather requirements, problem solve, and reason about the best way forward given needs, timeline, and available resources).

What we offer:
  • Fully remote position with flexible working hours.
  • An inspiring team of colleagues spread all over the world.
  • Pleasant, modern development and deployment workflows: ship early, ship often.
  • High impact: lots of users, happy customers, high growth, and cutting edge R&D.
  • Flat organization, direct interaction with customer teams.

We celebrate equality of opportunity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all team members. Join us as we transform cybersecurity, user privacy, and machine learning online!

Please note that all positions require pre-employment screening, including third-party verification of work history, education, and identity, as well as a final in-person interview and identity verification step, which will be conducted in your country of residence.
