Job description

Director of Hotel Operations – Hyatt Place Newark / Silicon Valley

Hands-On Operations Leadership | GM Growth Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on hotel operations leader with a proven track record of improving day-to-day hotel operations, developing and coaching department leaders, strengthening team culture, and creating accountability and consistent execution across multiple hotel departments.

This is an excellent opportunity for a strong leader who enjoys developing people, building high-performing teams, and taking hotel operations to the next level.

Ownership is committed to positioning the hotel as one of the top-performing Hyatt Place properties in the region. Our ownership group has a proven track record of building high-performing assets through a disciplined focus on team development, a strong and accountable work culture, exceptional guest satisfaction, operational excellence, and sustained top-line growth. We are hands-on operators who invest in our people and provide our leaders with the resources and support needed to succeed.

Compensation

Base Salary: $80,000–$100,000 + performance-based bonus

A sign-on bonus may also be available for the right candidate.

Our priority is finding the right operations leader, with compensation flexibility based on experience, qualifications, and demonstrated results.

About the Opportunity

Hyatt Place Newark / Silicon Valley is a modern, upscale select-service hotel featuring 112 guest rooms, a bar, indoor pool, fitness center, and approximately 2,000 square feet of meeting and event space.

The Director of Hotel Operations will report to the ownership team and work directly with department managers and supervisors to drive consistent day-to-day operational execution across Front Office, Housekeeping, Engineering & Maintenance, Breakfast/F&B, and other hotel operating areas.

This is not primarily a desk-based position. The successful candidate will maintain a highly visible presence throughout the property—inspecting operations, checking rooms and public areas, coaching department leaders, identifying deficiencies, solving problems, establishing corrective actions, and following up to verify completion.

The Director of Operations will play a critical role in turning hotel standards and management expectations into consistent daily execution.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Operational Leadership

  • Oversee day-to-day operations across Front Office, Housekeeping, Engineering & Maintenance, Breakfast/F&B, and other operating departments.
  • Maintain a highly visible, hands-on presence throughout the hotel.
  • Regularly inspect guest rooms, public areas, housekeeping, maintenance, breakfast, and Front Office operations.
  • Identify deficiencies, establish corrective actions and deadlines with department leaders, and follow up to verify completion.
  • Ensure procedures, checklists, brand standards, and operating expectations are consistently followed.
  • Identify recurring problems, determine root causes, and implement practical solutions.

Inspections & Quality Control

  • Inspect guest rooms and hotel areas for cleanliness, maintenance, presentation, service, and readiness.
  • Verify that department managers complete required inspections, checklists, training, and follow-up.
  • Monitor room readiness and resolve issues affecting room availability.
  • Maintain Hyatt brand standards and quality-assurance expectations throughout hotel operations.
  • Department Manager Coaching & Accountability

    • Inspect, direct, coach, train, follow up, and hold department leaders accountable for consistent execution of operational standards.
    • Work directly with managers and supervisors to improve productivity, quality, organization, and follow-through.
    • Establish clear expectations, responsibilities, and deadlines and verify results.
    • Coach managers in addressing employee performance and operational deficiencies.
    • Reinforce the culture, leadership expectations, and accountability standards established by the General Manager.

    Housekeeping & Room Operations

    • Work with Housekeeping leadership to maintain high cleanliness standards and consistent room inspections.
    • Monitor room readiness, housekeeping productivity, staffing, and recurring cleanliness issues.
    • Ensure deficiencies identified through inspections or guest feedback are corrected.
    • Improve coordination among Housekeeping, Front Office, and Engineering to maximize room availability and guest satisfaction.

    Engineering & Maintenance

    • Monitor preventive maintenance, work orders, out-of-order conditions, and guest-impacting maintenance issues.
    • Inspect rooms and public areas for maintenance deficiencies and verify completion of outstanding work.
    • Identify recurring equipment or building issues requiring longer-term solutions.

    Front Office & Guest Experience

    • Monitor Front Office service standards, guest interactions, and operating procedures.
    • Review guest feedback and service-recovery cases to identify recurring issues.
    • Coach the team when service deficiencies are identified and ensure guest concerns are resolved.

    Breakfast & F&B Operations

    • Monitor breakfast and F&B operations for quality, presentation, cleanliness, staffing, and service.
    • Work with F&B leadership to ensure standards are followed and recurring issues are corrected.

    Productivity, Labor & Cost Control

    • Monitor scheduling, staffing, productivity, overtime, labor efficiency, supplies, and departmental expenses.
    • Work with department managers and the General Manager to improve efficiency while maintaining guest experience and quality.

    Communication & Follow-Through

    • Maintain strong communication across hotel departments and regularly follow up on open operational items.
    • Escalate significant operational, staffing, guest, or maintenance issues to the General Manager.
    • Establish systems to ensure important tasks and operational issues are tracked through completion.

    Qualifications

    • 7+ years of progressive hotel operations experience, including management or supervisory responsibility, strongly preferred.
    • Previous experience as an Assistant General Manager, Director of Operations, Operations Manager, Rooms Division Manager, Front Office Manager, Executive Housekeeper, or comparable hotel leadership role.
    • Strong hands-on knowledge of Housekeeping, Front Office, Maintenance/Engineering, and guest services.
    • Demonstrated ability to identify operational deficiencies, implement corrective actions, and follow through to completion.
    • Proven ability to coach, train, motivate, and hold managers and employees accountable.
    • Demonstrated success improving operations, guest satisfaction, cleanliness, quality scores, and/or labor productivity.
    • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and follow-through skills.
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on hotel operational needs.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Hyatt experience is highly desirable but not required.
    • Experience with Opera PMS, Hyatt Connect, and other Hyatt systems is highly desirable.
    • Experience successfully improving operational standards, cleanliness, guest satisfaction, or quality scores.

The Operations Leader We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who walks the property, checks rooms, observes operations, identifies problems, coaches managers and employees, establishes corrective actions, and follows up until the work is completed.

The right candidate will combine high expectations and accountability with coaching, respect, recognition, fairness, and consistency.

We want an operations leader who takes ownership, pays attention to details, develops department managers, and drives consistent execution every day.

    Career Growth & GM Opportunity

A successful Director of Hotel Operations may have the opportunity for future advancement to General Manager based on demonstrated performance, leadership capabilities, organizational needs, and business circumstances.

Advancement will depend on the individual’s ability to demonstrate the broader leadership, financial management, culture-building, team development, and business judgment required of a General Manager.

If you are a hands-on hotel operations leader who enjoys improving operations, developing managers, solving problems, and driving accountability, we encourage you to apply.
