Job description

Position Summary:
Under the leadership of the Director of Surgical Services, the Central Sterile Technician is an active member of the department and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. The Tech collaborates with the healthcare team providers to prepare for the peri-operative patient's surgical procedures. The Tech assist with ordering and restocking of surgical suites with necessary supplies and reviews preference cards electronically providing up-to-date information that assists in achieving quality surgical outcomes for all cases. The Tech assists in preparing used instruments for transport to CS for decontamination, manual and automated cleaning and sterilization and adheres to all procedures for labeling trays for identification. The Central sterile tech maintains records for the processing of surgical instruments.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Education:

Requires a high school diploma or a GED state certification and the successful completion of a Surgical Technician program or Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Experience:

Requires up to one year of work related experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Licensure, Registrations & Certifications:

Requires and maintains a Surgical Technician certification or License by the State Board. (If Surgical Technician Certification is not current, it must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.)
Requires and maintains a certification in Basic Life Saving (BLS). (If BLS certification is not current upon hire, it must be obtained within the orientation period).
Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Functions as part of an interdisciplinary team with positive interpersonal communication skills when communicating with patients, families, visitors, physicians, co-workers, and staff from other departments of the organization.
  • Provides direct support to the nursing and technical staff in the delivery of quality patient care.
  • Follows the department director's and licensed nursing staffs' instruction and directions.
  • Complies with CRHS and departmental safety, infection control, and performance improvement initiatives to ensure the delivery of quality care and services.
  • Prepares for scheduled and emergent cases, gathers supplies for cases and pulls supplies for the next day's cases.
  • Collaborates with the healthcare team providers to be ready for the peri-operative patient's surgical procedures and assists with timely room turnover.
  • Orders and restocks surgical rooms with necessary supplies, as evidenced by staff and supervisor observation.
  • Collaborates with the surgical staff to provide up-to-date information on preference cards that assists in achieving quality outcomes for all surgical cases.
  • Assist in tracking of surgical product use to ensure accurate surgical case charges.
  • Decontaminates and prepares used instruments for transport to CS for terminal cleaning and sterilization.
  • Performs the sterilization of all instruments and equipment, prepares the sterile instrument trays and maintains the records of all related work.
  • Functions as part of an interdisciplinary team promoting positive interpersonal communication skills when communicating with patients, physicians and other healthcare staff.
  • Complies with CRHS and department safety, infection control and performance improvement initiatives to ensure the delivery of quality care and services.
  • Presents a professional image to CRHS nursing and medical staff members.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
