Stand Together

Arlington, VA • On-site

Full-time

Posted 10 days ago

Job description

Stand Together is a philanthropic community that helps America’s boldest changemakers tackle the root causes of our country’s biggest problems, from education to the economy, broken communities, and toxic division, among dozens of other pressing issues. We provide our partners with access to resources including funding, thought leadership, a network of peers, and a playbook for applying proven principles to transform lives and society.

As Director of Engineering, you will lead the engineering function for the Be The People platform. You will set technical direction, build and manage the internal engineering team, integrate the work of our staff augmentation partner, and own platform reliability and iteration velocity through launch and beyond.
How You Will Contribute
  • Set technical direction across architecture, data model, and integration patterns for btp.org.

  • Oversee the internal engineering team and decide when and how to bring in outside contractors or staff augmentation to fill gaps and scale capacity.

  • Work with the Director of 24/7 Operations on platform reliability and uptime through summer launch and beyond.

  • Drive iteration cadence: same-week content updates and two-week code cycles.

  • Lead knowledge transfer from Work & Co into the internal team so the platform can be operated independently.

  • Partner with the Director of Product Operations, Director of 24/7 Operations, and product leadership on roadmap and execution.

  • Hire, retain, and develop senior engineering talent across full-stack, back-end, middleware, and site reliability

What You Will Bring
  • Ten or more years of software engineering experience with five or more years leading and managing engineering teams.

  • Deep infrastructure and back-end experience, given how foundational both are to our work.

  • Track record running production platforms with consumer-facing traffic and continuous availability requirements.

  • Experience deciding when to build internally versus engage outside contractors, and managing the mix.

  • Strong technical judgment across modern web, API, and cloud infrastructure.

  • Track record of building engineering culture, hiring well, and growing senior individual contributors.

  • Comfort operating in a pre-CTO environment with the discipline to set durable foundations without over-fixing.

  • Background in a startup, early-stage, or entrepreneurial environment.

  • Track record of using AI-enabled tools and practices to accelerate your work.

What We Offer
  • Competitive benefits: Enjoy a 6% 401(k) match with immediate vesting, flexible time off, comprehensive health and dental plans, plus wellness and mental health support through Peloton and Talkspace.

  • A meaningful career: Join a passionate community of over 1,300 employees dedicated to improving lives and driving innovative solutions to complex social challenges.

  • Commitment to growth: Thrive in a non-hierarchical environment that empowers employees to discover, develop and apply their unique talents.

  • Competitive compensation: Our approach rewards the value you create through competitive salaries and bonus opportunities, allowing you to share in the success you help drive.

Our Values: Working for an organization within the Stand Together philanthropic community is different from many other places. The culture is deeply rooted in Principle Based Management® (PBM®), a framework guided by the principles that drive human progress, such as dignity, openness, and bottom-up empowerment. PBM® empowers employees to be entrepreneurial, to innovate, and to continually drive transformation.

We believe diversity fuels creativity, broadens knowledge, and helps drive success.  That is why we’re proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer and strive to treat all employees and applicants with honesty, dignity, and respect.
