Job Summary:
The Assistant Director manages, develops, and assesses programs and initiatives within Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA). MSA supports community engagement, personal growth, and leadership development for all students. In addition to programming and direct student support, the Assistant Director also serves as a resource to the university community on student development, informed by research, theory, and inclusive best practices. This role primarily engages undergraduate students and staff, with programs and initiatives that serve the broader Northwestern community.
Pay Range: The pay range for the Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Affairs is $62,000-64,000, depending on experience, skills, and internal equity.
Principal Accountabilities:
Program Development (30%)
- Develop programs and initiatives that offer opportunities for community engagement, personal growth, and leadership development for all students. Signature programs include MCC Wednesday, MCC Café, MSA Night Market, and quarterly Finals Exam Drop-In Sessions.
- Design and deliver leadership development content for MSA student staff and student group leaders to support their training and ongoing professional growth.
- Continually assesses outcomes and student feedback. Innovate to improve programs.
- Serve as the primary adviser student groups, providing guidance and support for organizational development, leadership growth, and programming initiatives.
- Advise and mentor students in successfully navigating the university experience by connecting them with appropriate campus and community resources that support their academic, personal, and leadership development.
- Manage programming, workshops, and engagement opportunities that support student development and foster community within physical spaces on campus, such as the Multicultural Center and other campus community spaces.
- Manage event details, logistical support, and partnerships with various departments for key initiatives and signature programs, including cultural heritage and community programming, monthly community gatherings, book clubs and movie nights, and end-of-year celebrations.
- Train, supervise, and evaluate a Graduate Assistant.
- Manage and implement strategic partnerships across the Division of Student Affairs, academic departments, and community partners to advance student belonging and wellbeing.
- Provide advice and counsel and recommend changes and improvements to better meet the needs of students through participation in committees, trainings, task forces, and interdisciplinary initiatives.
- In partnership with the Director of MSA, serve as a departmental liaison to alumni associations.
- Ensure program success in regard to participation and outcomes.
- Identify opportunities and strategies for short- and long-term growth and expansion.
- Oversee an annual programming budget and steward resources in alignment with departmental priorities and strategic goals.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
- 2 years program/project administration or other relevant experience.
- Strong familiarity with theories and models of leadership.
- Strong experience with project and budget management.
- Strong familiarity with student development theory and best practices related to leadership development.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as general interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well as part of a team and independently.
- Ability to collaboratively partner with a multitude of stakeholders.
- A master's degree in College Student Development, Higher Education Administration, or a related field. Or equivalent experience with collegiate student populations and a bachelor's degree.
- Experience developing, executing, and assessing educational programming for college students.
- Experience advising college students, individually and as members of student organizations, with an emphasis on student leadership skills.
- Supervision of para-professional staff.
- Commitment to continued personal and professional development.
- Strong understanding of best practices for the assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Experience working in a cultural center or similar community-based environment, with demonstrated ability to activate physical spaces to foster belonging, engagement, and community building.
- Strong presentation/facilitation skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Suite, collaborative tools.
