The University of Vermont Libraries seeks a forward-thinking and collaborative librarian to serve as Director of the Dana Health Sciences Library and to develop and advance a shared vision for inclusive, innovative health sciences library services. The Director serves as a strategic partner to academic and clinical leadership, advancing education, research, and patient care through innovative, accessible, and responsive library services.
Dana Health Sciences Library supports the educational, research, and patient care missions of the Larner College of Medicine, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the University of Vermont Medical Center, other partners across campus, and provides health information services to the wider Vermont community.
The Director leads and supports all aspects of health sciences library operations, including strategic planning, policy development, budgeting, assessment, and outreach. Working collaboratively with academic and medical center leaders, library colleagues, and campus partners, the Director helps advance equitable access to information and excellence in health sciences education and research. We are excited to welcome a leader who is reflective, collaborative, and passionate about supporting diverse learners and researchers and residents of Vermont in a rapidly evolving information environment.
This position reports to the Dean of Libraries and serves on the Libraries' Dean's Council. At the University of Vermont, a land-grant R1 research university, librarians hold faculty appointments without tenure and contribute through librarianship, scholarly and creative activity, and service.
Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and advance a shared vision for a health sciences library that aligns with institutional priorities, community needs, and the University's Green, Gold, and Bold strategic plan
- Provides leadership in the Libraries' strategic planning, programming, and operations as a member of the Dean's Council
- Lead strategic planning, assessment, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Foster inclusive, transparent, and participatory decision-making practices that contribute to a positive work environment
- Continuously evaluate and improve user experience through data, feedback, and engagement
- Lead assessment efforts related to access, services, and user satisfaction to drive continuous improvement and demonstrate impact
- Knowledge of emerging information issues and technologies, including AI, with the ability to anticipate trends and help shape the libraries future
- Oversee, help develop, and support instructional and research programs that advance evidence-based practice across health sciences curricula
- Contribute to the teaching mission and remain engaged with core library services and the university mission
- Ensure the library actively supports interprofessional education ( IPE ) by integrating resources, instruction, and expertise into collaborative teaching, research, and clinical training initiatives across the health sciences
- Mentor library faculty and staff in teaching, scholarship, and professional growth
- Partner with medical education leadership to support curriculum delivery and learner access to information resources
- Ensure library services are integrated across all phases of health sciences education, advancing equitable access for learners across multiple teaching sites, virtual environments, and geographically distributed locations
Partnerships & Outreach
- Cultivate strong, collaborative relationships with faculty, department chairs, clinical partners, and other library and campus units
- Support equitable access to information for diverse learners, researchers, and historically underserved communities
- Collaborate with clinical leadership to support evidence-based practice and point-of-care information needs
Operations & Management
- Provide leadership in budgeting, planning, assessment, access services, building operations and resource allocation
- Supervise and support library faculty and staff
- Collaborate on collection development and stewardship of print and electronic collections
- Ensure seamless, reliable access to library resources across all campus, clinical, and remote environments
- Develop and oversee service models that are responsive, visible, and aligned with user needs
- A master's degree (M.L.S., M.S., or M.A. in Library or Information Science or other variation) from a program accredited by the American Library Association or the equivalent professional credential in librarianship -or- a master's degree or PhD in another field plus completion of a formal program providing training as a librarian (e.g., fellowship, graduate certificate)
- At least five years of progressively responsible experience in academic, health sciences, or medical librarianship, including experience in a professional librarian role.Familiarity with library support of accreditation processes and competency-based curriculum design
- Experience with budgeting, planning, andproject management
- Experience supervising building operations, access services, and faculty and staff
- Experience with or familiarity with evidence-based practice, health sciences education, or research support
- Demonstrated ability to lead collaboratively and communicate effectively
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusive, collegial, and supportive leadership
- Demonstrated ability to engage in and support scholarly or creative activity appropriate to faculty librarianship
- Demonstrated experience with or interest in mentoring early career professionals

The Director has a primary appointment as an academic administrator and a secondary appointment as a Library Faculty member. Library Directors have a record of librarianship, scholarship, and service appropriate for an appointment at the rank of Library Associate Professor or above. Rank recommendations at initial hire will be based upon review of the candidate's previous experience (detailed in CV). At the rank of Library Associate Professor or higher, the finalist must go through an expedited promotion process after hiring to be appointed at this rank. Librarians at the University of Vermont hold faculty appointments without tenure. As such, librarians are expected to perform in three areas: Educational Mission (Librarianship), Scholarly and Creative Activity, and Service.
The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $130,000. Library Faculty are not eligible for tenure. Generous benefits package includes TIAA / CREF (or alternative plan), managed health care plan, professional development funds, and 22 days of annual leave.
