What does a director of inventory planning do?

A Director of Inventory Planning oversees the strategies and processes related to inventory management within an organization. Their responsibilities include forecasting demand, optimizing stock levels, coordinating with suppliers, and ensuring products are available to meet customer needs without overstocking. They often lead a team and collaborate with other departments, such as purchasing, sales, and operations, to align inventory goals with overall business objectives. Effective inventory planning helps reduce costs, improve cash flow, and enhance customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by a director of inventory planning, and how can they be addressed?

A Director of Inventory Planning often contends with balancing inventory levels to meet customer demand while minimizing carrying costs and avoiding stockouts. Rapid changes in market trends, supplier delays, and inaccurate demand forecasts can create additional hurdles. Successful professionals in this role typically address these challenges by implementing robust forecasting tools, fostering strong cross-functional communication with sales, operations, and procurement teams, and continuously analyzing performance data to adjust strategies as needed. Proactive problem-solving and adaptability are key to thriving in this dynamic environment.

To thrive as a Director of Inventory Planning, you need strong analytical skills, deep knowledge of supply chain management, and a relevant degree such as in business, logistics, or operations. Expertise in inventory management software (like SAP or Oracle), demand forecasting tools, and data analysis platforms is typically required. Leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for driving cross-functional initiatives and managing teams. These skills ensure optimal inventory levels, cost efficiency, and alignment with business goals in a dynamic supply chain environment.

Job description

Job Overview:

Looking for a role where youโ€™ll lead the planning and purchasing strategy behind a complex, multi-site supply chain network? Marvin is hiring a Sr. Director of Planning and Purchasing to lead end-to-end supply chain performance across our manufacturing network. This role is responsible for integrated planning, purchasing execution, and cross-functional alignment that supports customer service, schedule commitments, quality performance, inventory, and material cost. As a key supply chain leader, you'll guide a distributed team in a matrix environment while driving one-plan execution through Integrated Business Planning (IBP), Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP), and Sales & Operations Execution (S&OE).

Youโ€™ll excel in this role if you bring deep supply chain leadership experience, a strong operating rhythm, and proven success implementing integrated planning processes across geographically diverse sites. If youโ€™re ready to join a supportive team where your work will make a significant impact, we invite you to apply today.

This job is located in Warroad, MN. If you're considering relocating to Warroad, you may be eligible for a relocation benefit package to assist with your move. Marvin offers an extensive relocation benefit package that includes the movement of your household goods, temporary housing, and much more - in addition to a relocation counselor to assist you throughout the entire journey.

Highlights of your role:
  • Lead and develop planning and purchasing teams across multiple locations, establishing governance, decision rights, escalation paths, and consistent performance routines across sites.
  • Lead enterprise-wide ERP system transformation initiatives, driving process optimization, stakeholder engagement, change management, and successful adoption of new technology solutions.
  • Drive IBP processes that align demand, supply, inventory, capacity, and financial targets from corporate forecasts to plant-level execution.
  • Lead S&OP and S&OE processes, identifying constraints, driving tradeoff decisions, monitoring performance against plan, and ensuring effective recovery actions across sites.
  • Oversee supply, demand, and capacity planning while standardizing planning practices and improving planning tools and data accuracy across the network.
  • Provide functional leadership to purchasing teams, ensuring purchasing strategies and execution align with business plans while strengthening supplier engagement and accountability.
  • Own supplier continuity, risk mitigation, inventory strategy, and working capital improvement initiatives to support operational and financial performance.
  • Partner across operations, finance, quality, and engineering to drive one-plan alignment, decision clarity, and operational excellence.
You're a good fit if you have (or if you can):
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • 10+ years of supply chain experience.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) is preferred.
  • Proven success implementing IBP, S&OP, and S&OE processes.
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives across geographically diverse sites.
Also want to make sure you have:
  • Experience leading planning, purchasing, supplier performance, inventory, and cost initiatives within a multi-site manufacturing or supply chain environment.
  • Ability to build strong partnerships across operations, finance, quality, engineering, and leadership teams.
  • Demonstrated success translating strategic plans into operational execution and measurable results.
