What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director of Experience Design, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director of Experience Design, you need deep expertise in user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, along with a proven track record in leading cross-functional design teams and a relevant degree in design or related fields. Proficiency with design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and familiarity with prototyping and user research platforms are typically required. Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills distinguish top candidates in this role. These capabilities are vital for driving innovative, user-centered design solutions that align with business goals and deliver outstanding customer experiences.

How does a Director of Experience Design typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive user-centered solutions?

As a Director of Experience Design, you will regularly work alongside product managers, engineers, marketing teams, and business stakeholders to ensure that user needs are at the forefront of project decisions. Effective collaboration involves leading workshops, facilitating design sprints, and communicating design rationales to both creative and non-creative partners. You'll also mentor design teams, foster a shared vision, and align user experience strategies with business objectives, making strong interpersonal and leadership skills essential for success in this role.

Can a UX designer make 300k?

While some senior UX designers and experience design leaders can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $300,000, such compensation typically requires extensive experience, leadership roles, or working in high-cost markets. Most UX designers earn between $70,000 and $150,000, with higher salaries often associated with managerial positions, specialized skills, or working for large tech companies.

Is UI/UX still in demand in 2026?

As a Director of Experience Design, UI/UX remains highly in demand in 2026 due to the ongoing need for user-centered digital products and services. Companies continue to prioritize intuitive interfaces and user experience, making skills in design tools, user research, and prototyping essential for career growth in this field.

Is UI/UX replaced by AI?

As a Director of Experience Design, it is important to understand that AI can assist in automating certain UI/UX tasks, such as user data analysis and prototyping, but it does not fully replace the need for human-centered design, creativity, and strategic thinking. AI tools are used to enhance design processes rather than replace the role of experienced designers. Successful experience design still relies on understanding user needs and applying design principles that AI cannot replicate entirely.

Is UX a dead field?

As a Director of Experience Design, UX remains a vital and evolving field focused on creating user-centered digital experiences. The demand for UX professionals continues to grow as organizations prioritize customer satisfaction, usability, and innovative design, supported by tools like prototyping software and user research methods.

We are seeking an engaging, design-tested leader to become our Experience Design Director. You'll test, iterate, and refine our core offerings and feature set, starting first with the launch of our first product in Fall 2014. As the chief user advocate, you'll be responsible for cross-functional research, analysis, concept development, and execution. As with our other senior roles, this opportunity offers you a seat at the table of an exciting, rapidly growing company. You'll help not only set direction for the experience, but for our company as a whole. The role involves significant hands-on collaboration with other team leads to continue to evolve the go-to-market strategy and execution, as well as team recruiting, management, training and mentoring.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product management, user research, content design, visual design, and engineering to ensure a smooth experience development process
  • Manage the recruiting process for your multi-disciplinary team
  • Formulate and execute user research & synthesis, exploration, storytelling, detailed design, user testing and prototyping
  • Develop an work plan founded in agile principles to update and continuously improve the application and user experience
  • Build a user-centered application and experience for mobile platforms that interacts seamlessly with products
  • Develop and maintain effective specifications and design patterns
  • Scope design initiatives and manage/prioritize work items
Qualifications
  • Degree in interaction or graphic design. While a masters degree is preferred, depth of work experience will also be considered
  • A depth of experience in Interface Design, Interaction Design, or Information Architecture for consumer products. We're looking for someone that has at least five years of experience with significant depth in at least one of these areas.
  • Experience managing cross-disciplinary design teams
  • A portfolio demonstrating past work experience and relevant, user-centered experiences
  • Experience designing interfaces for hardware devices and familiarity with firmware development
  • In-depth knowledge of designing both mobile and web-based applications
  • A passion for (and hopefully some experience in!) improving health and wellness for real people
  • Ability to comfortably dive into designing visual screens and/or prototyping with various tools/software of your choice
  • As a team player with a can-do attitude, you know how to do a lot with a little in our dynamic, fast-paced and entrepreneurial culture
