Job description

Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) is seeking a Director of Admissions to serve as the chief admissions officer for the Carver College of Medicine, Office of Student Affairs and Curriculum, and provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all admissions and recruitment activities. This position is responsible for directing the policies, processes, and programs that support the recruitment, evaluation, selection, and successful transition of incoming medical students.
The role collaborates closely with institutional leadership, faculty, admissions committees, and external partners to develop and implement recruitment strategies, admissions policies, and enrollment goals that support the mission and strategic priorities of the College of Medicine. The Director oversees the operations of the Office of Admissions, including management of admissions systems, evaluation processes, data analysis, reporting, and budget oversight.
This position provides leadership and supervision to admissions staff and works collaboratively with campus partners and external organizations to promote the university, ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements, and support the recruitment of a highly qualified student body.
Primary Duties
Recruit Students: Promote the University to the Public
  • Oversee and direct the day-to-day operations of an admissions office.
  • Work with campus partners to develop, recommend and implement admission policies and procedures, recruitment/communication plans, and enrollment goals.
  • Provide input and recommendations to strategic direction and effectiveness.
  • Ensure continuous quality improvement of recruitment and admissions programs with highly qualified student body; provide input and recommendations to strategic direction and effectiveness; provide data for external reviews as requested.
  • Plan, direct and oversee programming for premedical conferences that provides information about medical school as well as other UI health science programs; give presentations regarding medical school admission to various constituencies as requested.
  • Advise and counsel prospective as well as unsuccessful applicants and provide information about other collegiate health sciences programs as part of those counseling efforts.

Application Processing and Evaluation/Credit Evaluation
  • Provide leadership and oversight for admissions and enrollment services including oversight for all application processing and evaluation functions and admissions committees for the Carver College of Medicine.
  • Direct the development and updating of admissions policies and procedures to maintain compliance with changes in Federal, State, and university requirements.
  • Advise and work collaboratively with the Admissions Committee Chair and members regarding issues that impact the Committee's charge to annually select a class; serve as an ex officio member of the CCOM Admissions Committee.
  • Oversee, advise, facilitate, and evaluate the admissions interview process.
  • Act as liaison to faculty, staff, applicants, students, pre-medical advisors, undergraduate colleges, AAMC, and other external agencies and organizations on matters related to admissions to the College.
  • Direct and monitor the operation of the College's admission process including reviewing and updating all published admissions material annually.
  • Advise and work collaboratively with the Dean, the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the Admissions Committee Chair and faculty regarding the establishment or modification of admissions requirements.

Student Transition Services
  • Oversee and consult with programs and activities, like Second Look Day, that facilitate the successful transition of entering students.

Systems Support and Development; Data Analysis, Research and Reporting
  • Work with internal and external partners to design, develop and implement systems in support of recruitment, admission, and enrollment.
  • Provide overall leadership for the support and development of management systems, including data analysis, research and reporting functions.
  • Analyze post-admission data as requested by the Dean, Senior Associate Dean or Admissions Committee for purposes of admission evaluation.

Budget Oversight and Management
  • Review and develop budgets and make recommendations on program spending.
  • Monitor revenue and expenditures and participate in strategic financial planning. Advocate for funding necessary to meet program goals. Authorize program expenditures.

Leadership and Supervision
  • Develop and implement policies and practices of a culture that supports staff engagement in the workplace. Provide administration and/or supervision.
  • Hold leaders accountable for high performance and a highly engaged culture by articulating expectations, monitoring performance and providing feedback consistently across areas of responsibility.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Masters degree in an appropriate field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Considerable (3-5 yrs) experience with program administration, including professional school administrative experience and admissions experience.
  • Demonstrate job-related experience with fostering a welcoming and respectful work environment and/or otherwise demonstrate their ability to foster a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment for people from all types of backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with faculty, administrators, and external stakeholders to support recruitment, admissions, or student services initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex administrative processes, programs, or services and ensure compliance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience analyzing data, preparing reports, and using findings to inform strategic decision-making and program improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences including students, faculty, institutional leadership, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines in a dynamic environment.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of current trends in medical education, admissions, and accreditation; health care delivery; and legal and other issues that impact medical student admissions.
  • Experience with data analysis and student development.
  • Experience developing and implementing recruitment strategies or enrollment management initiatives.
  • Experience presenting to large audiences, including prospective students, faculty, or external organizations.
  • Experience supervising staff and fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
  • Experience working with admissions or student information systems and related data reporting tools.
  • Experience working in an academic medical center, health sciences college, or higher education environment.
