Job description

Director of Digital Strategy
Hendrix College is seeking a full-time, 12-month Director of Digital Strategy. Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the Director of Digital Strategy leads the creation and execution of strategic content across all online platforms, ensuring the College's digital presence is compelling, cohesive, and aligned with institutional priorities. This role serves as the architect and driver of digital storytelling, overseeing the planning, coordination, and production of written, visual, and multimedia content that supports enrollment, advancement, and brand visibility.
In addition to leading content strategy and production, this individual serves as the primary manager for the institution's website, ensuring it remains dynamic, user-centered, and enrollment-focused. The Director will also shape and strengthen the College's social media platforms by auditing and repurposing existing content and through the creation of new strategic content designed to maximize engagement and impact.
The Director of Digital Strategy is both visionary and hands-on, a multifaceted creative leader who moves quickly, collaborates deeply, and executes with excellence. Exceptional writing, video, photography, and editing skills are essential, along with the ability to translate broad institutional goals into actionable plans and measurable digital outcomes. The successful candidate is comfortable receiving a strategic objective, determining the best path forward, and independently moving work from concept through execution while proactively communicating progress, questions, and recommendations with appropriate stakeholders.
This position is well suited for a self-directed professional who enjoys building systems, identifying opportunities, solving problems, and helping shape the future of the College's digital strategy. Priorities may shift quickly based on institutional needs, and the successful candidate must be comfortable exercising sound judgment, asking timely questions, adapting to changing circumstances, and moving work forward with minimal day-to-day direction.
We are a fast-moving, high-performing team. We are looking for someone who brings energy, creativity, discipline, and ownership to everything they do.
Desired Attributes
  • Clear, concise, accurate written communication.
  • Intellectual curiosity.
  • Eager to try new ways of working and learn from success and failure-a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Shares and receives ideas without fear or pride of authorship.
  • A team player-honest, thoughtful, direct but kind, and willing to contribute to projects that are not within the job description.
  • Values the residential liberal arts experience and our mission but understands we will have to adapt.
  • Demonstrates initiative by identifying needs, proposing solutions, and advancing work without waiting for detailed instruction.
  • Comfortable translating broad strategic direction into organized plans, priorities, and deliverables.
  • Proactively communicates questions, obstacles, and progress to keep projects moving.
  • Demonstrates sound professional judgment and adapts digital communications appropriately as institutional priorities or circumstances change.
  • Builds strong, trusting relationships across campus and recognizes that effective collaboration is foundational to successful communications.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead the strategic planning, execution, and continuous improvement of the College's digital presence across all online platforms.
  • Plan, coordinate, and produce high-quality written, photographic, video, and multimedia content.
  • Develop and maintain integrated digital content calendars aligned with recruitment, advancement, and institutional initiatives.
  • Serve as primary manager and strategic lead for the College website (hosted on the WordPress platform), ensuring content quality, optimization, performance, and alignment with institutional goals.
  • Partner with the Communications Specialist to audit, repurpose, and enhance social media platforms for greater effectiveness and engagement.
  • Support media-driven storytelling initiatives in collaboration with the Director of Communications, preparing and amplifying digital content tied to local and regional media coverage.
  • Monitor analytics and performance metrics to refine content strategy and maximize impact.
  • Maintain consistency in brand voice, visual identity, and messaging across all digital platforms.
  • Translate institutional priorities into actionable digital strategies, project plans, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Monitor the College's digital presence, audience engagement, and online conversations to identify emerging opportunities, trends, and reputational issues, making recommendations and adjusting strategy as appropriate.
  • Develop systems, workflows, and processes that improve the efficiency, consistency, and effectiveness of the College's digital communications.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, digital media, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in digital content strategy, communications, marketing, or a related role.
  • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills with the ability to translate complex ideas into clear, engaging digital content.
  • Demonstrated experience producing and managing multimedia content including video, photography, and written storytelling.
  • Experience managing website content within a CMS environment. WordPress experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with social media strategy, content planning, and audience engagement across multiple platforms.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently organize work, establish priorities, and carry projects from concept through completion.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment where priorities evolve and projects often begin with strategic direction rather than detailed instructions.
  • Excellent judgment, problem-solving ability, and willingness to seek clarification when needed while maintaining ownership of assigned work.
  • Ability to interpret analytics and apply insights to improve digital engagement and performance.
  • A collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset with the ability to work effectively across departments.
