Job description

Job Summary

The Director of Accounting is a hands-on leadership role responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of the company's financial statements and reporting. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role leads the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable teams and partners closely with the Director of Accounting Operations, who leads sales and inventory-related transactional support and processing.

This role is well suited to someone who genuinely enjoys the mechanics of accounting — reconciliations, close processes, and getting the details right — while also being able to manage a team, work cross-functionally, and support the company through growth, acquisitions, and system changes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

-Own the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements

-Lead and manage the month-end and year-end close process, ensuring deadlines are met and financials are accurate and complete

-Prepare and deliver financial reporting packages and analysis for the CFO and executive leadership

-Serve as a key point of contact for the independent CPA firm during the annual audit; prepare audit schedules, support requests, and coordinate fieldwork

-Ensure account reconciliations are completed timely and accurately across the general ledger

-Directly manage and develop the Accounts Receivable (AR) and Accounts Payable (AP) teams, setting priorities and building team accountability

-Partner with the Director of Accounting Operations to ensure smooth handoffs between transactional processing and financial reporting

-Calculate and process sales/employee commissions accurately and on schedule

-Support payroll accounting, including reconciliation of payroll-related accounts

-Support cash management, banking relationships, and treasury functions, including monitoring cash positions and assisting with forecasting

-Provide accounting support related to inventory-heavy operations

-Support due diligence, integration, and accounting work related to acquisitions

-Assist with accounting system conversions and process improvement initiatives

-Roll up sleeves as needed — this role is expected to be hands-on, not purely supervisory

Position Qualifications

-Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent required

-Minimum of 7 years of accounting experience which includes 3–5 years of public accounting experience, and/or 2–4 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role

-CPA preferred

-Successful prior experience managing or supervising a team

-Experience with payroll, commission calculations, banking/treasury management, and inventory accounting

-Experience with accounting software or system conversions

-Experience supporting acquisitions or business integrations

-Prior experience in equipment dealership, construction, manufacturing, distribution, or another inventory-heavy industry preferred

-High level of attention to detail and data accuracy

-Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills

-Genuinely enjoys reconciliations and the discipline of getting the numbers right

-Passionate about the completeness and accuracy of financial data

-Willing to be hands-on and work through the details, not just delegate

-Comfortable operating in a mid-market company environment where roles span both strategic and tactical work

-Must be an excellent communicator, orally and in writing, with the ability to communicate to employees and partners at all levels

-Must exemplify the company’s values of Integrity, Courtesy, Respect, Innovation, and Safety
