Work EnvironmentCreative teams, film studios, game development companiesMotion capture studios, post-production facilities
Industry UsageLeads creative direction, oversees motion capture processesOperates and maintains motion capture equipment, captures data

The main difference is that the Director Motion Capture Artist focuses on creative oversight and directing motion capture projects, while the Motion Capture Technician handles the technical setup and data collection. Both roles are essential in the motion capture industry but serve different functions within the production process.

What are some common challenges faced by a Director Motion Capture Artist when coordinating with animators and technical teams?

A Director Motion Capture Artist often encounters the challenge of translating live motion data into usable digital assets while ensuring clear communication between performers, animators, and technical teams. Balancing creative vision with technical constraints, such as data cleanup and rig compatibility, requires strong problem-solving and collaboration skills. Additionally, managing a fast-paced production schedule and adapting to evolving project needs are common aspects of the role. Successful directors foster open communication, set clear expectations, and bridge the gap between creative and technical departments to deliver high-quality results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director Motion Capture Artist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director Motion Capture Artist, you need expertise in animation, film production, and motion capture processes, typically supported by a degree in animation, visual effects, or a related field. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as MotionBuilder, Maya, and motion capture hardware and systems is crucial. Strong leadership, creative vision, and effective communication skills set you apart when directing actors and collaborating with technical teams. These skills ensure seamless integration of motion capture data into high-quality visual productions and foster a productive creative environment.

What does a Director Motion Capture Artist do?

A Director Motion Capture Artist oversees the creative and technical aspects of capturing actors' movements for use in films, video games, and other digital media. They work closely with performers, directors, and technical teams to ensure that the captured motion accurately conveys the desired emotion and action. Their responsibilities include directing performers on set, troubleshooting technical issues, and collaborating with animators and visual effects teams to integrate motion data into digital environments. This role requires a strong understanding of both performance and technology.

Job description

General Robotics is building the future of general robot intelligence. Our mission is to enable rapid, robust, and safe deployment of general intelligence for autonomous systems and robotics. Our core platform, GRID, provides a comprehensive source of robot skills through a fast cloud-native runtime to make any robot intelligent - across aerial, wheeled, humanoid, quadruped, arm robots and more.
We are seeking a 3D Technical Artist/Creative Technologist to be the expert responsible for onboarding new robots to the AirGen and GRID platforms, customizing implementations to specific use cases, and ensuring our AI-powered autonomous systems perform flawlessly in high-fidelity virtual environments.
Embedded within the Customer Success organization, you will work with customers directly to translate their complex real-world challenges into technical simulation solutions. You will focus on the development of the pipeline for ingesting complex robotic systems into Unreal Engine (AirGen) and NVIDIA Isaac Sim. This role offers a front-seat view of the transformative impact of Physical AI in industry and an opportunity to learn from, and work alongside, a world-class team of AI and robotics pioneers.
Responsibilities
  • Robot Onboarding & Optimization: Develop workflows to onboard robotic CAD and high-fidelity models into Unreal Engine (AirGen) and Isaac Sim, ensuring physical accuracy, proper kinematics, and performance optimization for real-time sensor simulation.
  • Custom Implementation & Tooling: Develop custom tools and simulation scenarios tailored to specific customer use cases, including sensor modeling (Lidar, Depth, RGB) and drone flight environments.
  • Synthetic Data Generation (SDG): Build and develop pipelines for generating high-quality, large-scale synthetic datasets to train computer vision and AI models for autonomous navigation.
  • Digital Twins & Data Capture: Develop 3D scanning and photogrammetry workflows to create digital twins of real-world environments and assets for high-fidelity simulation.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Robotics Engineers, Perception Teams, and Simulation Engineers to ensure the visual and physical fidelity of our digital environments matches real-world sensor data.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Graphics, Fine Arts, Technical Animation, Robotics, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience as a Technical Artist/Technical Director/Creative Technologist in gaming, VFX, or industrial simulation.
  • Houdini: Strong proficiency in Houdini for procedural environment generation, asset processing, and simulation workflows.
  • USD Expertise: Deep understanding of Universal Scene Description (USD) for multi-tool pipelines, specifically within the NVIDIA Omniverse / Isaac Sim ecosystem.
  • Engine Proficiency: Deep expertise in Unreal Engine (Blueprints, Materials, Niagara, Profiling) and/or NVIDIA Isaac Sim.
  • Technical Literacy: Strong understanding of PBR workflows, lighting, and real-time rendering constraints.
  • Capture Experience: Experience with 3D scanning, photogrammetry, and studio photography for asset creation.
  • Python Proficiency: Ability to write scripts to automate tasks within DCC tools and simulation environments.
  • Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows operating system proficiency.
  • Security and Privacy focused mindset.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Azure Cloud Infrastructure: Knowledge of Azure for cloud-based simulation, managing remote compute for rendering, or scaling synthetic data generation pipelines.
  • Optitrack & Motion Capture: Experience setting up and operating Optitrack systems for motion capture, including skeletal tracking or rigid body tracking for robotic validation.
  • Customer-Facing Experience: A courteous and professional demeanor with experience working closely with customers to translate requirements into deliverables.
  • C++ Development: Proficiency in C++ for Unreal Engine (extending classes, performance optimization) or building standalone native tools.
  • Advanced AI/CV: Experience with World Models, Gaussian Splatting, or Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs).
  • Agentic Workflows: Familiarity with AI-driven automation or agentic behaviors within simulation environments.
  • General knowledge of networks and computer infrastructure.

Bonus Skills
  • CAD & 3D Printing: Experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360) and 3D printing for rapid prototyping, robot maintenance, or custom sensor mounting.
  • Hardware hacking: Raspberry Pi, Arduino, IOT, soldering etc
  • Flight Ops: Part 107 Drone Pilot License or significant experience piloting UAVs.
  • Robotics API: Experience with ROS/ROS2 or specialized robotics simulators like Mujoco.
