The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in DISTRICT 07 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to a Highway Foreman 1 or Highway Foreman 2. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
  • Operates, as needed various types of heavy equipment.
  • Makes minor repairs to equipment as needed. Performs preventative maintenance, such as oil changes, etc...
  • Performs other duties as directed, such as shoveling asphalt, digging footings for setting concrete forms, placing traffic control devices, delivering, loading and unloading materials and/or equipment, flagging traffic, operating power and/or hand tools, etc.
  • Attends required training in accordance with the Department's Structured Training Program
  • Obtains/maintains CDL (required for MEO 2 and MEO 1 - Heavy only); reports CDL revocation to appropriate personnel in accordance with the Departments Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Policy (PPM #25).
  • May perform incidental repair and construction tasks such as bridge repair, drainage structure repair, installation of guardrail, fencing, fender systems and cabling at moveable bridges and other structures.
  • May perform any other tasks as assigned by supervisor or higher-level personnel in order to accomplish the Department's transportation, maintenance and construction mission.
  • May train and/or assist in training lower level operators or laborers
  • May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Appointment Type: Probational and Promotional
Career Progression: This Position may be filled as a MEO 1, MEO 2, or MEO 1/Heavy
Compensation:
  • MEO-1 $16.06 /hourly - receives Premium Pay of $1.00/hour for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase granted upon attainment of permanent status.
  • MEO-2 $17.18/hourly - receives Premium Pay of $1.00/hour for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase granted upon attainment of permanent status.
  • MEO-1/HEAVY $21.05/hourly.
