Job description


Position Title: Fitness Instructor Position Code: FitIns-8215
Department: Del E. Webb Wellness and Rehabilitation Center Oracle Code: FitIns-8215
Reports to: Director of Wellness Center Safety Sensitive: ☒ Yes ☐ No
Exempt Status: ☐ Yes ☒ No
Qualified candidates will have a minimum of one (1) year experience within the wellness/fitness industry and a High School diploma or equivalent.
Position Purpose:
All KHI employees are expected to perform their respective tasks and duties in such a way that supports KHI's vision to be among the kindest, highest quality health systems in the country.
Works under the supervision of the Director or their designee. Instructs members and guests on the proper use of the cardiovascular, strength and flexibility exercise equipment. Monitors participants in the fitness area.
Key Responsibilities
  • Greet members and guests in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Demonstrates positive/professional relations with members, guests, all staff members.
  • Orients members and guests on proper technique for equipment to ensure their safety and the best use to reach their goals.
  • Monitors all individuals making corrections as needed.
  • Designs exercise program based on members' abilities and goals; monitors workouts for consistency, improvement, and compliance.
  • Performs fitness assessments according to current exercise testing and prescription standards; record blood pressure, heart rate; record body fat measurement(s).
  • Responsible for general cleanliness of fitness area, locker rooms, general equipment.
  • Upholds organization policies/procedures to ensure member/guest/staff safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education: High School diploma or GED Equivalent or college level degree - must provide diploma or official transcripts upon hire
Certification/Licensure: American Heart Association HeartSaver CPR/AED or BLS certification OR American Red Cross Basic Life Support certification required prior to start date
Experience: At least 1-year experience within the wellness/fitness industry.
Able to speak clearly and articulate instructions in an individual and/or group setting; be able to manipulate small items and equipment to operate computer(s), stereo equipment, strength machines, cardiovascular machines; serve as a motivator; effectively communicates with all populations.
Able to develop a positive approach to effectively promote active participation.
Preferences
Education: BS/BA in Exercise Physiology or related field.
Certification/Licensure: A national certification through ACSM, ACE, or NSCA.
Experience: Two years' experience within the wellness/fitness industry.
Special Position Requirements
  • Exposure Categories: Category II: Expected duties have possible, but not routine, potential for exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
  • Other potential hazard(s): Exposure to physical injuries such as tripping, falling, muscle strains and other injuries related to exercise. Cleaning fluids used for cleaning and maintaining equipment. Ability to handle mechanical hazards due to electronic equipment.

Work Requirements
  • Able to lift at least 50 lbs.; clean fitness area and move equipment as needed; assist members with lifting at times
  • Ability to lead exercise that may involve continuous physical exertion with repetitive movement, self-manipulation, pushing and pulling of limbs, bending, lifting, stepping, and standing for much of shift;; manipulate and incorporate exercises that use resistive equipment; visually monitor participants to assure safe and proper execution of exercise moves .
  • Able to communicate related exercise instructions; memorize exercise routines and interpret directions.
  • Interpret blood pressure and heart rate measurements at rest, during testing and exercise; recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of cardiovascular disease or other indications to discontinue exercise.
  • Able to hear calls for help.
