Director Hpc System Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director HPC System Engineer?

To thrive as a Director HPC System Engineer, you need deep expertise in high-performance computing architecture, system integration, and advanced problem-solving, usually supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with HPC cluster management tools, parallel computing frameworks, and certifications in relevant technologies like Linux or cloud platforms are highly valued. Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills help drive cross-functional teams and strategic initiatives. These abilities are crucial for optimizing complex computing environments and ensuring organizational objectives are met efficiently.

What does a Director HPC System Engineer do?

A Director HPC (High Performance Computing) System Engineer oversees the design, implementation, and management of high-performance computing systems within an organization. They lead teams responsible for deploying and maintaining scalable computing infrastructures that support advanced scientific research, data analysis, and complex computational tasks. This role typically involves strategic planning, collaborating with stakeholders, ensuring system security and performance, and staying updated with the latest HPC technologies. Directors also mentor engineering staff and help set the vision for future HPC initiatives.

What are some common challenges faced by a Director HPC System Engineer when managing large-scale computing infrastructure?

As a Director HPC System Engineer, one of the main challenges involves ensuring the reliability and scalability of complex, high-performance computing environments while balancing resource allocation and budget constraints. Managing a diverse team of engineers, coordinating with researchers or end-users, and keeping up with rapidly evolving HPC technologies are also frequent hurdles. Additionally, optimizing system performance, troubleshooting bottlenecks, and overseeing regular maintenance and security updates are part of the daily responsibilities. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and effective communication across multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Director Hpc System Engineer vs Hpc System Engineer?

AspectDirector Hpc System EngineerHpc System Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Computer Science or related, certifications like HPC certificationsBachelor's in Computer Science or related, similar certifications
Work EnvironmentLeadership role overseeing teams, strategic planningTechnical role focusing on system setup and maintenance
Employer & IndustryResearch institutions, large tech companies, data centersResearch labs, universities, tech firms

The main difference is that the Director Hpc System Engineer holds a leadership position responsible for strategic planning and team management, while the Hpc System Engineer focuses on technical system implementation and maintenance. The director role involves higher-level decision-making, whereas the engineer role is more hands-on technical work.

Job description

About Us

We are AI researchers and builders who understand how to curate data and RL environments that truly improve models. We curated OpenThoughts, one of the best open reasoning datasets, and have trained SOTA models such as Bespoke-MiniCheck and Bespoke-MiniChart.

We are embarked on a journey to build Environments that are entire digital worlds that can be used to push the frontier of agents.

What You'll Be Working On

You will work directly with our research team on RL environment and task creation for agent training. This means designing observation spaces, action spaces, reward signals, and success criteria for new environments — and building the infrastructure that makes world-scale RL training possible. This is a high-ownership role; you will be building novel systems, not maintaining legacy ones.

Must-Have Skills

3+ years of ML engineering experience — model training, fine-tuning, or post-training pipelines in research or production

Strong Python and deep learning proficiency (PyTorch preferred; familiar with training loops, optimizers, mixed precision)

Hands-on experience with LLM post-training — SFT, RLHF, PPO, DPO, or reward model training — and understanding of how training data quality affects model behavior

Familiarity with RL frameworks (Gymnasium, dm_env) and the ability to design or modify reward functions for agent training objectives

Experience running experiments at scale on cloud or HPC (AWS, GCP, SLURM, or Ray)

Solid understanding of evaluation methodology — held-out sets, benchmark design, avoiding train/eval contamination
