ENGINEERING ASSISTANT
Location: Santa Rosa, CA
Pay: $32.00–$39.00 per hour, DOE
Schedule: Day Shift | Full-Time
Type: Temp-to-Hire

POSITION SUMMARY
The Engineering Assistant provides technical and day-to-day support to Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Inspection functions in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This position serves as a key liaison between the Engineering Manager and inspection team, helping coordinate daily priorities, resolve issues, maintain workflow, and ensure work is completed accurately and efficiently.
The Engineering Assistant acts as a lead and resource for the inspection team, helping train new employees, document procedures and processes, answer day-to-day questions, and escalate issues when appropriate. The ideal candidate is a dependable, level-headed problem solver who can be the voice of reason when challenges arise and help keep the team focused, organized, and productive.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Team Leadership & Daily Coordination
  • Serve as the primary day-to-day liaison between the Engineering Manager and Inspectors.
  • Help communicate daily priorities, workload, schedule changes, and technical updates to the inspection team.
  • Act as a lead resource for Inspectors without necessarily having direct supervisory responsibility.
  • Help coordinate workflow and ensure inspections and related activities remain on schedule.
  • Provide guidance and support when employees encounter technical, procedural, or workflow issues.
  • Serve as a trusted point of contact and voice of reason when resolving day-to-day challenges.
  • Identify issues that require management attention and communicate them promptly and professionally.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, professionalism, accuracy, and a positive work environment.
Training & Employee Development
  • Train and assist with onboarding new Inspection and Engineering support employees.
  • Demonstrate proper inspection procedures, equipment use, documentation requirements, and work instructions.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and clarification to team members as needed.
  • Document employee training, qualifications, certifications, and completed training activities.
  • Help identify training gaps and recommend additional training or development opportunities.
  • Assist in maintaining current work instructions, procedures, and training materials.
Technical & Inspection Support
  • Provide technical support for manufacturing, engineering, quality, inspection, and process control activities.
  • Review inspection results, manufacturing data, and process information to identify discrepancies, trends, or potential issues.
  • Assist Inspectors with interpreting drawings, specifications, work instructions, and customer requirements.
  • Support the use of inspection and measurement equipment while ensuring procedures are followed accurately.
  • Assist with troubleshooting inspection, process, equipment, documentation, and quality issues.
  • Work closely with Engineering and Quality to investigate and resolve problems affecting product quality or production flow.
  • Help ensure inspection activities are completed accurately, consistently, and in accordance with established requirements.
Documentation & Process Support
  • Create, update, and maintain work instructions, procedures, forms, training documentation, and other technical records.
  • Document process changes, issues, corrective actions, and training activities accurately and timely.
  • Assist with maintaining controlled documentation and ensuring employees are working from current procedures.
  • Review documentation for completeness, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Support the development and implementation of improved processes and standardized work practices.
Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement
  • Serve as a first point of contact for day-to-day issues and help determine practical solutions.
  • Investigate discrepancies and assist with identifying root causes.
  • Work collaboratively with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Inspection to resolve problems and prevent recurrence.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, quality, communication, and workflow.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, including process standardization, 5S, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Maintain a calm, professional, and solutions-focused approach when dealing with challenging situations.
Quality & Compliance
  • Ensure inspection and technical activities are performed in accordance with established procedures, specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Support investigations involving nonconforming material, process variation, inspection concerns, and customer requirements.
  • Maintain familiarity with applicable quality standards, procedures, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Follow all company safety, quality, environmental, and operational policies.
  • Identify and escalate safety or quality concerns appropriately.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree, engineering coursework, or related education preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in manufacturing, inspection, engineering support, quality, or a related technical environment.
  • Previous experience serving as a lead, trainer, senior technician, or technical resource is strongly preferred.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively with both management and production/inspection employees.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, work instructions, and procedures.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Excel.
  • Ability to organize multiple priorities and keep work moving in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to train others and clearly explain technical processes.
  • Professional, dependable, collaborative, and solutions-oriented.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain calm and objective when resolving workplace issues.
  • Must maintain reliable attendance and punctuality.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in optical, precision, medical device, aerospace, semiconductor, or other highly regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with inspection equipment, metrology, measurement systems, SPC, or manufacturing data systems.
  • Experience creating or maintaining SOPs, work instructions, training documentation, or controlled documents.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, quality systems, lean manufacturing, 5S, and root cause analysis.
  • Experience working with MES or other manufacturing/quality management systems.
  • Previous experience coordinating an inspection or technical team.
