Job description

Jupiter Power is an energy infrastructure company focused on the development, construction, trading and operation of battery energy storage assets across U.S. power markets. Formed in 2017, the company is a national leader in energy storage deployment, utilizing its proprietary optimization applications daily to dispatch its fleet and support its offtake customers. Backed by BlackRock's Diversified Infrastructure business, Jupiter Power has a strategic portfolio of nearly 2,300 MW / 5,000 MWh in operations or under construction and a pipeline of over 12,000 MW in new projects in development.


To support its expanding portfolio, Jupiter Power is seeking an Energy Manager who will be responsible for management of Qualified Scheduling Entity (QSE) requirements along with associated processes and systems, to support the daily trading and dispatching operations of Jupiter's battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio, with an initial concentration in ERCOT. This individual will have the opportunity to make a quantifiable impact working in Jupiter's front office alongside traders, real-time operators, analysts, regulatory staff, and data science team. This position will be part of a growing Trading desk managing operating assets in ERCOT with expansion into CAISO, PJM, MISO, NYISO and NEPOOL.


Regular duties include (i) responsibility for desk activities associated with Level 4 QSE participation in ERCOT, including timely management of all market submissions and ISO-required communication, (ii) implementing/developing internal processes for actions and procedures to comply with QSE market participation requirements, (iii) supporting the Trading/Dispatching team to understand & implement new market rules and regulations that impact portfolio operations, (iv) managing relationship with the MMS vendor to support the trading and dispatch of BESS assets in the Day-Ahead Energy, Real-Time Energy and Ancillary Service Markets and (v) supporting initiatives to advance internal proprietary tools for scheduling and dispatch decision-making in the Real Time market.


Key Responsibilities

QSE Operations and Compliance

Apply in depth ISO/ERCOT market operations knowledge to manage QSE activities related to market submissions, ISO-required communications, and responses to market events and inquiries.

Lead the implementation/development of procedures and guidelines for the QSE desk and wider Trading team to fulfil the requirements of a Level 4 QSE in ERCOT, in accordance with Jupiter Power Risk Policy and to comply with any QSE operations requirements under third party agreements.

Track applicable market rules to ensure that Jupiter's market operations comply with ISO protocols and/or recommend improvements in internal procedures, including working with internal compliance group to ensure that real-time processes adhere to PUC & NERC rules.

Manage the relationship with Jupiter's MMS vendor to ensure QSE systems functionality, including troubleshooting of issues and scoping of system requirements.

Work with Jupiter SCADA team, ISO personnel, and the Jupiter Trading team to facilitate the commissioning of new sites and ensure they are properly set up for full market participation.

Assist internal Data Science team to advance in-house tools for BES portfolio management and real-time operations support in adherence with market operations requirements.

Regulatory and Market Monitoring

Lead implementation of ongoing market design changes associated with Real-Time Co-Optimization + Batteries in Jupiter's internal systems and procedures.

Maintain a relationship with Jupiter's ISO Client Representative to support asset onboarding and ongoing support for asset operations and reporting.

Work internally with the Regulatory team, Trading/Dispatching team, Settlements team to understand BES participation in the market and find creative solutions to changing market structures.

Attend ERCOT working group meetings to follow regulatory proposals that have an impact on the operations of our BESS.

Serve as primary liaison between trading, asset management, and data science teams.


Requirements

Five or more years of experience in power markets with a preference for ERCOT. Experience in other ISOs is a plus.

Direct experience with QSE operations and a working knowledge of ERCOT protocols, NERC standards, and market systems.

Strong understanding of day-ahead operations, real-time operations, ancillary services, and market participation.

A degree(s) in finance, economics, math, electrical theory, electrical power distribution, electrical power generation, or relevant field.

Ability to work and communicate effectively in a high stress environment while managing time in sometimes rapidly changing situations

Demonstrates high standards in risk management, performance management, relationships with relevant 3rd parties and clients, communication, analysis, decision making, and legal & regulatory compliance

Self-starter with a high comfort level with fast-moving organizations, with the curiosity and enthusiasm to innovate and formulate new ideas and to bring the best out of co-workers.

Willingness to work non-traditional hours to support business needs.
