Summer Intern - Firmware Engineer, Allegion Access Technologies - Farmington, Connecticut
As an Allegion Firmware Engineer intern, you will contribute meaningful work and make a direct impact to the Firmware/Embedded Software competency. You will gain hands-on experience defining and implementing firmware features for access control and automatic door systems, support product validation, and collaborate closely with hardware, test, and manufacturing teams. What You Will Do:
  • Develop, debug, and test embedded firmware for microcontroller-based products.
  • Participate in requirements definition and design discussions for new firmware features and product updates.
  • Implement and maintain device drivers, communication stacks (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet, BLE as applicable), and peripheral interfacing.
  • Work with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and bare-metal architectures as required by product designs.
  • Support hardware bring-up and verification by using tools such as debuggers (JTAG/SWD), logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
  • Design tools to measure and analyze existing and new products.
  • Participate in code reviews, version control workflows, and continuous integration/build processes.
  • Document firmware design, test procedures, release notes, and standard operating procedures.
  • Utilize tools such as functional block diagrams, flow diagrams, state-diagrams, and others as required in product development.
  • Work with a team to create well-rounded solutions.
  • Deepen your understanding of basic electronics and the use of electrical tools, such as a digital multi-meter, oscilloscope, and digital logic analyzers.
  • Obtain the experience to create a foundation for growth and future opportunities with Allegion

What You Need to Succeed:
  • Pursuing a degree in a relevant discipline, e.g., Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering Technology, and Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and initiative, e.g., school club officer, sports team captain, resident advisor, leadership on school or work projects, etc.
  • Preferred knowledge of C programming language.
  • Preferred knowledge of working with embedded microprocessors and their associated IDE and tools.
  • Basic electronics understanding, including low voltage wiring.
  • Passion to be hands-on and able to work in an engineering laboratory environment.
  • Ability to work in both a team and individual setting.
  • Resiliency and ability to adapt quickly.
  • Effective listening, time management and creative problem-solving techniques.
  • A desire to learn, grow and develop by working on projects that will impact Allegion's business and customers.

Compensation: This range is provided by Allegion. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience.
  • The expected Base Hourly Range: $25-$26/hour. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
