Job description

Position Summary

Lion Energy is seeking an Embedded Systems Manager to lead our embedded engineering team in the development of next-generation energy storage and portable power solutions. This role owns the technical direction, team leadership, and delivery execution across embedded software, model-based controls, and embedded hardware disciplines. The Embedded Systems Manager balances hands-on technical oversight with people management, ensuring the team delivers reliable, scalable, and high-performance embedded systems while growing engineers' skills and career paths.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a cross-disciplinary team of Embedded Software Engineers, Model Based Controls Engineers, and Embedded Hardware Engineers
  • Set technical direction and architecture standards for embedded firmware, control systems, and hardware integration across product lines
  • Own hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development for direct reports
  • Drive project planning, resource allocation, and prioritization across concurrent embedded systems programs
  • Partner with Product, Project Management, and Engineering leadership to align embedded deliverables with product roadmaps and launch timelines
  • Partner with Operations on PCB fabrication, assembly, and production readiness, ensuring hardware designs are optimized for manufacturability and quality
  • Manage relationships with third-party engineering resources, including contract engineers and OEM partners (e.g., China-based teams), to ensure quality, technical alignment, and schedule adherence
  • Guide firmware architecture, control algorithm design, and hardware integration decisions through design reviews and code reviews
  • Identify technical risks early and drive resolution of complex cross-functional firmware, controls, and hardware issues
  • Establish and enforce engineering best practices, including coding standards, test strategies, documentation, and version control workflows
  • Report team progress, risks, and technical strategy to the CTO and other cross-functional leadership
  • Support recruiting efforts and represent the embedded systems team in cross-functional and executive discussions
  • Stay current on embedded systems trends, tools, and technologies relevant to power electronics and energy storage products

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • Typically 6+ years of embedded software, controls, or hardware engineering experience, including 2+ years in a technical leadership or people management role
  • Strong technical background in embedded firmware development (C/C++), model-based control design (MATLAB/Simulink), or embedded hardware design
  • Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring engineering teams, including performance management and career development
  • Working knowledge of power electronics and energy storage systems, including:
    • DC-DC and DC-AC conversion
    • Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)
    • Battery charge management and protection
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent projects and balancing competing priorities across disciplines
  • Experience managing or coordinating with contract engineers or OEM/offshore partners is a plus
  • Strong communication skills, with experience presenting technical strategy to executive stakeholders
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet/TCP-IP) and embedded system integration principles
  • Experience with Agile or similar project management methodologies preferred
