Job description

Job Title: Electrical Design Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking a Electrical Design Engineer to lead the design and implementation of industrial automation systems. In this role, you will own projects from concept through commissioning, delivering safe, reliable, and scalable electrical and control solutions for automated equipment and machinery. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and play a key role in advancing automation initiatives and new product capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical and control systems for automated equipment, machinery, and industrial automation applications.
  • Develop detailed electrical schematics, panel layouts, power distribution designs, and engineering drawings for new and existing systems.
  • Specify and integrate automation components including motors, drives, sensors, robotics, servo systems, machine vision, conveyors, and industrial networks.
  • Design and implement machine communication networks using industrial networking technologies such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, and EtherCAT.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, project teams, customers, and vendors to deliver complete and integrated automation solutions.
  • Create and maintain bills of materials, documentation, and technical specifications to support engineering, installation, and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable safety standards, industrial safety practices, and project requirements.
  • Support installation, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities for automated equipment and control systems.
  • Lead technical projects from initial concept through deployment, providing guidance on electrical design and automation best practices.
  • Contribute to facility-wide automation initiatives aimed at improving processing speed and enabling new product offerings.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience designing electrical and controls systems for industrial automation environments.
  • Strong knowledge of power distribution, motor controls, industrial safety, and electrical schematic development.
  • Experience with robotics, servo systems, machine vision, conveyors, and automated machinery.
  • At least 3 years of experience with industrial networking technologies such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, or EtherCAT.
  • Proven ability to lead technical projects from concept through deployment in an automation or machine build environment.
  • Hands-on experience with panel design and electrical control panel layout.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in schematic design for industrial automation and control systems.
  • Machine build or integrator experience of approximately 5 years within an automation-focused environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and external partners to deliver complete automation solutions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with SolidWorks Electrical for electrical design; candidates with strong AutoCAD Electrical experience are also considered.
  • Experience in electrical engineering and electrical design for automated equipment and machinery.
  • Familiarity with industrial automation integrators and complex machine build projects.
  • Strong documentation skills, including the ability to create bills of materials and technical specifications.
  • Interest in supporting automation initiatives related to new product areas such as EV-related projects and refurbished products.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving automation technologies and contribute to continuous improvement of processes and systems.

Work Environment

This role is primarily based in an office environment with regular work in a warehouse setting when engaging with prototype equipment and automated systems. The position requires working on-site five days per week to collaborate closely with engineering and operations teams and to support hands-on activities with equipment. The facility focuses on processing and automation rather than traditional manufacturing, and personal protective equipment is not typically required for this site. The organization is actively automating the entire facility to process devices more efficiently and is investing in long-term automation initiatives, including expansion into EV-related projects and refurbishment of products beyond small electronics.
