Job description

Role Overview:

You will design and build the hardware, controls, and software stack required to print energetic materials safely and repeatably. This is a hands-on skunkworks role, part robotics engineer, part controls engineer, part startup builder.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and build a prototype propellant 3D printer (extrusion or hybridsystem)
  • Develop motion control systems (multi-axis gantry or robotic arm)
  • Implement extrusion systems for high-viscosity, particle-loaded materials
  • Write control software (Python/C++/embedded) for: Motion control;Deposition control; Process monitoring
  • Integrate sensors (pressure, temperature, flow rate, vision systems)
  • Develop closed-loop control for material flow and deposition quality
  • Collaborate with chemist to match material properties to hardware capabilities
  • Ensure system safety for energetic material handling

Requirements

  • B.S./M.S. in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or similar
  • 5-12+ years experience in robotics, automation, or additive manufacturing systems

Strong experience with:

  • Motion systems (stepper/servo control)
  • Embedded systems and control loops
  • Software development (Python, C++, ROS, or similar)
  • Experience building custom hardware systems from scratch

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Direct Ink Writing (DIW), paste extrusion, or slurry-based AM
  • Experience with high-viscosity or particle-filled materials
  • Familiarity with industrial robotics or CNC systems
  • Experience in hazardous or controlled environments
