Description

The Director of Choral Activities provides leadership for the Greenville University Choir, an ensemble composed of both students and community members and supports the mission of the University through excellence in music and performance.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Direct choir rehearsals and performancesย 
  • Recruit, develop, and retain choir membersย 
  • Plan and lead major annual events, including Messiah, Commencement, choir tours, and special university servicesย 
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and community participantsย 
  • Contribute to the growth and visibility of the choral programย 
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Additional Information:

  • Opportunity to teach courses and individual lessons as an adjunct for additional compensation

Requirements


Required Qualificationsย 

  • Master's degree in choral conducting, music education, vocal performance, sacred music, or a closely related field.ย 
  • Demonstrated experience directing choral ensembles.ย 
  • Experience conducting both vocal ensembles and, ideally, instrumental ensembles or orchestra.ย 
  • Strong knowledge of choral literature across a variety of styles, periods, and traditions.ย 
  • Ability to teach healthy vocal technique and develop singers of varying skill levels.ย 
  • Strong rehearsal planning and ensemble leadership skills.ย 
  • Ability to recruit, retain, and develop student singers.ย 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in a related field, particularly vocal music.ย 
  • Piano accompaniment skills.ย 
  • Training and experience in online coursework.ย 
  • Innovative technology skills relevant to teaching.ย 
  • Familiarity with Finale and/or Sibelius music notation software.ย 
  • Music ministry or service-oriented experience.

Compensation:

Salary is based on academic preparation and years of relevant experience.


The Music Department:

The Greenville University music department has a rich history that includes nearly a century long choral program. GU offered the very first CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) degree in the nation in the late 1980s and continues to take pride in our innovative music programs. In 2012 we launched our Worship Arts degree program which continues to train worship leaders and maintain an extremely high job placement. Our Music Industry Studies (MIS) degree program is also highly innovative, training students in the areas of studio recording, audio post-production/game audio design, live sound/lighting, commercial performance, and songwriting. We offer numerous ensembles, including Fusion (commercial music), Lab Band (original rock groups), Pursuit worship bands, Gospel Choir, Jazz Band, GU Choir, Chamber Singers, Concert Band, and Marching and Pep Bands. Greenville University has launched several renowned bands, artists and audio/recording engineers.
