Job description

The Director of Financial Analysis and Budget serves as a key leader within the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine (IUSM) Financial Services unit. This position is a critical role within IUSM, serving as a director within the Dean's Office, reporting to the Associate Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This position provides significant input for leadership related to IUSM long-term and short-term financial planning and resource allocation.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Acts as a subject matter expert in finance for the school.
  • Interacts with colleagues at all levels of the school, campus, and university.
  • Analyzes school-level financials, analysis, planning, and reporting and is critical to supporting the Associate CFO in interpreting the financial health of the school and ensuring availability of funds for continuing operations.
  • Collaborates with Financial Services leaders in development of policies, strategic plans, and programs within IUSM related to the financial resources and operations of the school.
  • Manages the school-level budget, analysis, and reporting; leads the financial analysis staff.
  • Directs financial analysis for the dean's office units and departments, including items such as: reviewing statements for profit and loss, income and expense variances, budget analysis, preparing financial forecasts, trend analysis, cash balances, and key metrics such as full time equalivents (FTE), days cash on hand, and indirect costs, among others.
  • Leads the annual IUSM budget construction process and maintains the budget throughout the fiscal year.
  • Collaborates on strategic planning efforts for IUSM Departments, Regional Medical Centers, and Dean's Office units to include analysis of financial performance, implementing standardized business planning processes, and developing operational improvement plans in support of the Associate Chief Financial Officer.
  • Directs the daily activities of the Financial Analysis and Budget staff.
General Responsibilities
  • Oversees the analysis of financial performance in university units; devises strategic plans to meet financial goals.
  • Develops short-term and long-term business plans, creates policies and procedures, and analyzes past financial performance.
  • Prepares and presents financial analyses and recommendations to top-level university management.
  • Provides expert advice on all levels of financial activity and interpretation of financial policies to Financial Analysts, senior management, and top-level university management.
  • Follows crucial economic, industrial, and corporate trends by analyzing financial reports; implements relevant data into the organization's financial decision-making.
  • Creates financial models and analyses of financial and operational metrics to evaluate and direct business performance.
  • Manages the financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes.

EDUCATION
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • 5 years in finance, financial administration, accounting, or a related field

  • 3 years of management experience in a relevant field
