What is a dimensional inspector?

A Dimensional Inspector is responsible for measuring and verifying the accuracy of machined or manufactured parts to ensure they meet engineering specifications. They use precision tools such as calipers, micrometers, and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) to check dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes. Their role is crucial in quality control, ensuring that products meet industry standards and customer requirements. Dimensional Inspectors often work in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and other industries where precision is critical.

What does a dimensional inspector do?

A typical day for a Dimensional Inspector involves setting up and using precision measuring instruments to verify that machined or fabricated parts meet exact specifications and tolerances. You may spend time reviewing technical drawings, performing first-article and in-process inspections, documenting results, and communicating findings to production or quality engineers. The work often requires both independent analysis and collaboration with production teams to address issues or suggest process improvements. You'll also be responsible for maintaining accurate records and ensuring that all inspection equipment is properly calibrated and functioning. This varied and detail-oriented routine plays a crucial role in maintaining high standards of quality and customer satisfaction within the manufacturing process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dimensional inspector?

To thrive as a Dimensional Inspector, you need a strong background in precision measurement, blueprint reading, and quality control, often supported by a technical diploma or relevant manufacturing experience. Familiarity with inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and quality management software is typically required, and certifications like ASQ CQT can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication with production and engineering teams are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure that manufactured parts meet strict tolerances, support efficient production, and uphold product quality standards.

We specialize in high-precision inspection of complex cast components, including airfoils and internally cored geometries, using state-of-the-art structured light (blue light) scanning and metrology systems.

UNEW utilizes advanced automated, computer-aided inspection techniques to deliver consistent, high-quality data that supports product qualification, process validation, and production integrity. We partner with major OEMs and foundries to provide a single, reliable source of dimensional inspection expertise. Visit our website at www.unew.com.

Position Summary

The Senior Layout Technician / Engineer is a key technical role responsible for executing and leading complex dimensional inspections on turbine components. This position extends beyond standard inspection execution and requires strong expertise in layout strategy, metrology principles, data interpretation, and problem-solving within tight tolerance environments.

This role functions as an experienced individual contributor, operating with minimal supervision while maintaining full accountability for accuracy, quality, and timeliness of deliverables. The position also includes customer interaction, technical problem-solving, and contributions to process improvement and automation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced dimensional inspections on turbine castings, including airfoils, cores, and internal passages
  • Develop and execute layout strategies in accordance with OEM specifications (e.g., Pratt & Whitney, GE)
  • Utilize structured light / blue light scanning systems (e.g., ATOS) and Zeiss Inspect (GOM Inspect) software
  • Interpret detailed engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T requirements to validate dimensional compliance
  • Analyze and report inspection results in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 17025, AS9100, and NADCAP requirements
  • Generate and review inspection reports, including First Article Inspection (FAI), qualification layouts, and multi-piece studies
  • Apply metrology principles such as gage R&R, measurement uncertainty, and traceability standards
  • Interface with customers and suppliers to clarify requirements, present results, and support root cause analysis
  • Support troubleshooting of dimensional nonconformances and provide technical recommendations
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, including inspection efficiency, data processing, and workflow optimization
  • Mentor junior technicians and support training and development efforts
  • Maintain a high standard of accuracy, consistency, and documentation

Required Qualifications
  • 3-10+ years of experience in dimensional inspection, preferably in aerospace or turbine casting environments
  • Strong proficiency in Zeiss Inspect (GOM Inspect) for analysis and reporting
  • Experience with structured light / optical scanning systems (ATOS or similar)
  • Strong understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5 or equivalent)
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and OEM specifications
  • Working knowledge of ISO9001, ISO17025, AS9100, and NADCAP standards
  • Understanding of gage R&R, measurement uncertainty, and statistical analysis methods
  • Proven ability to work independently on complex inspection tasks with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
  • U.S. person status required (per ITAR regulations)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with turbine airfoil or investment casting inspection
  • Familiarity with OEM specifications such as Pratt & Whitney or GE
  • Experience with multi-piece studies and statistical reporting
  • Scripting or automation experience (Python, GOM scripting, or similar)
  • Experience improving inspection workflows or developing internal processes

Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary range: $66,000 – $86,000, depending on experience
  • Opportunities for performance-based bonuses and advancement into technical leadership roles
  • Competitive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off

Why This Role Matters

This position plays a critical role in ensuring the dimensional integrity of highly engineered turbine components. The work directly supports customer qualification efforts, process validation, and production readiness. This role is a key contributor to both technical excellence and overall business performance.
