What is a dimensional control?

A Dimensional Control job involves the precise measurement, inspection, and verification of components, structures, or assemblies to ensure they meet specified tolerances and design requirements. Professionals in this field use advanced tools like laser trackers, total stations, and 3D scanning technology to conduct surveys and alignments. This role is crucial in industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, construction, and shipbuilding, where accuracy is essential for safety and functionality.

What does a dimensional control do?

A Dimensional Control professional’s day often involves taking precise measurements of structures or components, comparing them to design specifications, and documenting any deviations. They are responsible for calibrating and operating advanced measurement equipment, such as laser scanners and CMMs, to ensure accuracy throughout the project lifecycle. Collaboration with engineers, quality assurance teams, and construction or manufacturing personnel is common to resolve discrepancies and maintain quality standards. These tasks ensure that finished products or structures meet strict industry and safety requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in dimensional control?

To excel in Dimensional Control, strong skills in measurement techniques, mathematical analysis, and an understanding of engineering drawings are essential, often backed by a degree or certification in a relevant technical field. Familiarity with precision instruments such as laser trackers, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and CAD software is typically necessary. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These qualities enable accuracy in measurements, support quality assurance, and foster effective teamwork in manufacturing or construction environments.

The successful candidate will eliminate build risks by translating complex metrology data into actionable design solutions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ability to assist in generating metrology reports: Assist with the dimensional lab in creating dimensional reports using various dimensional reporting software(s).
  • Establish GD&T Fundamentals: Define, review, and approve geometric dimensioning and tolerancing schemes on automotive engineering drawings to ensure strict compliance with ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Analyze and assist with reporting Metrology Data: Create metrology reports, review, interpret, and synthesize measurement data from 3D scanners and CMMs to identify part-to-CAD deviations.
  • Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Partner with Product Design Engineers early in the development cycle to establish critical datums, mating features, and optimized tolerance budgets.
  • Perform Tolerance Stack-Up Analyses: Conduct 1D and 2D tolerance stack-up simulations to predict vehicle assembly variations, flushness risks, and gap conditions.
  • Translate Data into Action: Convert complex point-cloud data and color deviation maps into clear engineering recommendations for root-cause problem-solving.
  • Train and Mentor Teams: Act as the internal subject matter expert (SME) to educate design engineers, manufacturing teams, and suppliers on proper GD&T interpretation and feasibility.
  • Monitor Quality Metrics: Review statistical process control (SPC) data from pre-production builds to validate process capability and print feasibility.
