What is a Dimensional Control job?

A Dimensional Control job involves the precise measurement, inspection, and verification of components, structures, or assemblies to ensure they meet specified tolerances and design requirements. Professionals in this field use advanced tools like laser trackers, total stations, and 3D scanning technology to conduct surveys and alignments. This role is crucial in industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, construction, and shipbuilding, where accuracy is essential for safety and functionality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Dimensional Control position, and why are they important?

To excel in Dimensional Control, strong skills in measurement techniques, mathematical analysis, and an understanding of engineering drawings are essential, often backed by a degree or certification in a relevant technical field. Familiarity with precision instruments such as laser trackers, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and CAD software is typically necessary. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These qualities enable accuracy in measurements, support quality assurance, and foster effective teamwork in manufacturing or construction environments.

What are some of the typical daily responsibilities of a Dimensional Control professional?

A Dimensional Control professional’s day often involves taking precise measurements of structures or components, comparing them to design specifications, and documenting any deviations. They are responsible for calibrating and operating advanced measurement equipment, such as laser scanners and CMMs, to ensure accuracy throughout the project lifecycle. Collaboration with engineers, quality assurance teams, and construction or manufacturing personnel is common to resolve discrepancies and maintain quality standards. These tasks ensure that finished products or structures meet strict industry and safety requirements.

Experience developing and analyzing GD&T

Expertise in developing and analyzing locating strategies for body, trim, and chassis systems

Experience with CAD systems and different metrology equipment (CMM, scanner, perceptron, vision)

Background performing finite element analysis (FEA)

Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!

As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:
