What is a digital twin engineer?

A Digital Twin Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains digital replicas of physical assets, systems, or processes. These virtual models use real-time data to simulate, predict, and optimize performance, allowing organizations to improve efficiency, detect problems early, and make data-driven decisions. Digital Twin Engineers typically work in industries such as manufacturing, energy, automotive, and smart cities, leveraging technologies like IoT, AI, and simulation software to create and manage digital twins.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital twin engineer?

To thrive as a Digital Twin Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering, data modeling, simulation, and a relevant engineering or computer science degree. Familiarity with digital twin platforms (such as Siemens NX, ANSYS Twin Builder), IoT frameworks, and programming languages like Python or MATLAB is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable effective design, monitoring, and optimization of virtual models, ensuring accurate real-time insights for operational decision-making.

What are some common challenges digital twin engineers face when integrating real-time data from physical assets?

Digital Twin Engineers often encounter challenges related to data quality, connectivity, and system interoperability when integrating real-time data from physical assets. Ensuring that sensors and IoT devices reliably provide accurate, timely data can be complex, especially in large-scale or legacy environments. Additionally, aligning data formats and protocols between various systems requires strong problem-solving and collaboration with IT and operations teams. Overcoming these hurdles is crucial for building effective digital twins that deliver actionable insights.

What is the difference between Digital Twin Engineer vs Data Engineer?

AspectDigital Twin EngineerData Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields; knowledge of IoT, simulation, and modelingBachelor's in Computer Science, Data Science, or related fields; expertise in databases, ETL, and data pipelines
Work EnvironmentIndustrial settings, manufacturing, IoT platforms, simulation labsData centers, cloud platforms, analytics teams, software development environments
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, energy, smart citiesTech companies, finance, healthcare, e-commerce

The Digital Twin Engineer focuses on creating virtual replicas of physical assets for simulation and monitoring, often working in industrial environments. In contrast, Data Engineers build and maintain data pipelines and infrastructure to support data analysis across various industries. While both roles require technical skills, their applications and environments differ significantly.

Our team uses modern MBSE practices to translate mission needs into precise, traceable, and verifiable technical requirements across a complex, multi-system environment.
As a Digital Engineer / MBSE Analyst, you will support the technical planning, development, and integration of digital-twin capabilities that advance program goals and mission outcomes. You will help shape concepts, architectures, and model-based engineering artifacts that ensure digital-twin solutions are aligned, interoperable, and technically sound across the broader system landscape.
This position may be supported from any of the following locations: Colorado Springs, CO; Arlington, VA; or Seal Beach, CA.
What you'll do:
  • Help lead technical planning and execution of digital-twin efforts in support of program objectives.
  • Support the development of digital-twin concepts, architectures, use cases, and technical roadmaps in collaboration with engineering and program teams.
  • Assist in adapting Peraton Labs' agentic AI and digital-twin capabilities to meet program-specific needs.
  • Define component-level requirements derived from operational needs, systems-engineering objectives, system behaviors, and stakeholder priorities.
  • Ensure compliance with model-interoperability approaches, data-exchange patterns, fidelity expectations, and integration guidance across digital-twin and simulation environments.
  • Work with data, AI/ML, software, and systems-engineering teams to identify and integrate required data sources, dependencies, model inputs and outputs, assumptions, and validation methods.
  • Identify technical risks, dependencies, sequencing concerns, integration challenges, and capability gaps associated with digital-twin development.
  • Ensure digital-twin efforts remain aligned with program objectives, Model-Based Systems Engineering practices, CTO advanced-analytics initiatives, and stakeholder needs.

Additional four (4) years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree
  • This position requires the candidate possess a minimum of Top Secret clearance with ability to upgrade to TS/SCI. The candidate must maintain the clearance
  • 2+ years of experience applying MBSE in complex system environments.
  • Experience developing and supporting systems-engineering processes across the full system lifecycle, including analysis, planning, design, development, deployment, integration, testing, or configuration of software.
  • Expertise using the Cameo Systems Modeler suite of tools.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with MBSE validation suites.
