What is a digital system design engineer?

Digital System Design Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test digital circuits and systems, such as microprocessors, embedded systems, and digital communication devices. They use hardware description languages (HDLs) like VHDL or Verilog to create and simulate digital logic. Their work often involves collaborating with software engineers and hardware teams to ensure that digital systems function efficiently and reliably. These engineers play a crucial role in industries like electronics, telecommunications, and computing.

What are some common challenges digital system design engineers face when working on large-scale projects?

Digital System Design Engineers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as managing complex system requirements, ensuring interoperability between various hardware and software components, and meeting strict deadlines. Coordinating with cross-functional teams—such as software developers, hardware engineers, and verification specialists—is crucial for resolving integration issues and maintaining project alignment. Staying up-to-date with evolving technology standards and tools also plays a significant role in overcoming these challenges and delivering robust digital systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital system design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital System Design Engineer, you need a strong background in digital electronics, logic design, and hardware description languages such as VHDL or Verilog, typically supported by a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard EDA tools like Xilinx Vivado, Altera Quartus, or ModelSim, along with knowledge of FPGA and ASIC design flows, is essential. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities set top performers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensuring reliable, efficient, and innovative digital systems that meet complex project requirements.

Description

Join the Fun at Arrow International!

Arrow International is the world's #1 maker of charitable gaming products, from pull tabs and bingo paper to cutting-edge electronic gaming systems. Our products power entertainment in social and gaming venues around the globe, and we're growing fast!

We're building a winning culture that's all about teamwork, passion, and innovation. At Arrow, you're not just another employee, you're part of a high-performing team that's redefining fun and giving back to communities. We believe in rewarding your hard work with profit-sharing, 401(k) matching, great benefits, and paid time off, including a bonus week every July!

If you're looking for a career that's exciting, meaningful, and full of opportunity, Arrow is the place to be.

Arrow International is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to provide senior-level mechanical design capability for novel and custom process machinery.

This role will focus on original machine design and R&D-level work for equipment that is not commercially available, or where commercial solutions do not provide a competitive advantage. The right person will be comfortable designing new machinery from the ground up, supporting build and commissioning, and developing solutions that improve Arrow's manufacturing capabilities.

This position will work closely with Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Automation, Production, Maintenance, and Operations to design, evaluate, and integrate custom machinery across Arrow's manufacturing environment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of novel process machinery from concept through build and commissioning.
  • Develop detailed mechanical designs using SolidWorks or an equivalent CAD platform.
  • Apply web handling, tension control, and registration principles for continuous-feed print applications.
  • Produce fabrication drawings, BOMs, and procurement packages for outside fabrication.
  • Evaluate and adapt commercial machinery for integration into Arrow's manufacturing architecture.
  • Support patent / IP documentation for novel machine designs where applicable.
  • Provide design review oversight and mentorship to internal engineering resources.
  • Partner with Engineering, Production, Maintenance, and Operations to understand equipment needs and translate them into practical machine design solutions.
  • Support troubleshooting, design refinement, and continuous improvement during machine build, installation, and production commissioning.
  • Help establish repeatable design standards, documentation practices, and engineering review processes for custom machinery projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering required; M.S. preferred.
  • 7+ years of industrial machinery design experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing production machinery, not just modifying existing equipment.
  • Experience taking a machine from concept through production commissioning.
  • Web handling, printing, or converting machinery experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks required.
  • Experience with PDM / data management preferred.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, machine design principles, fabrication methods, tolerances, and equipment integration.
  • Ability to produce detailed fabrication drawings, BOMs, and procurement documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to design practical solutions for manufacturing challenges.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work across Engineering, Automation, Production, Maintenance, and Operations.
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on manufacturing environment and supporting equipment through design, build, installation, and commissioning.
