Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition.
The Communications and External Relations department is seeking a full-time Project Manager, Digital Publishing, responsible for updating, maintaining, and publishing content on the Museum's website and other digital platforms in line with best practices for search, accessibility, editorial style, and user experience, using an enterprise content management system (CMS).
Reporting to the Assistant Director for Web Production, the Project Manager will be responsible for populating new content, as well as for the remediation of outdated content, by implementing the latest CMS templates to ensure optimal functionality. This work is accomplished with a range of stakeholders with rolling deadlines, so managing priorities across multiple projects is essential.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Edit and publish timely updates to various pages on the Museum's website by correctly using current web templates and in line with best practices for web publishing, including for search, accessibility, editorial style, user experience, and brand standards.
  • Work with teams across the Museum to remediate outdated webpages, migrate external sites into CMS, make updates, or develop pages to advance specific projects, which may include a range of initiatives, from the Margaret Mead Film Festival to traveling exhibitions to educational programs.
  • Train CMS users, manage CMS workflows, and test CMS functionality to identify and support remediation needs as they arise.
  • Create and maintain a detailed project calendar/project management interface to track overlapping project timelines, as well as detailed deadline dates for individual contributors.
  • Work with the Photo team and other partners to source and process images for publishing, including cropping, resizing, renaming, and adding appropriate metadata to meet set specifications for Museum web pages, as well as other digital channels such as apps and digital signs.
  • Manage videos across the Museum's website to ensure they are up to publishing standards, including working with stakeholders to support the development of descriptive transcripts.
  • Interpret data dashboards and create spreadsheets and presentations to inform remediation projects.

The expected salary range for the Project Manager, Digital Publishing is $70,000/annual - $80,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.
Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization, and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least four years experience in daily publishing using an enterprise content management system.
  • Understanding of web publishing best practices, including WCAG and SEO.
  • Solid copy editing skills, attention to detail, and excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic Photoshop experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, communications, or media.
  • Experience with a variety of CMS platforms (i.e., Ibexa) in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, working with multiple partners and balancing competing priorities.
  • Experience managing web content workflows.
  • Ability to clarify requirements, manage reviews, and escalate gaps.
  • Professional experience in a museum, nonprofit, or academic setting.
  • Experience selecting images for content and quality.
  • Intermediate Photoshop experience.
  • Awareness of emerging search trends, including content discoverability within Large Language Models.

Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
