What is a digital experience designer?

A Digital Experience Designer is a professional who creates engaging and effective user experiences across digital platforms, such as websites, mobile apps, and interactive products. Their work involves understanding user needs, designing intuitive interfaces, and collaborating with developers and stakeholders to ensure seamless digital interactions. They use tools like wireframes, prototypes, and user research to optimize the look, feel, and functionality of digital products. The goal is to make digital experiences enjoyable, accessible, and user-friendly.

How does a digital experience designer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Digital Experience Designers regularly work alongside product managers, developers, marketers, and researchers to ensure that digital products are user-friendly and aligned with business goals. They often participate in brainstorming sessions, provide wireframes or prototypes, and gather feedback through user testing. Effective communication and an openness to feedback are essential, as designers must balance user needs with technical and business constraints. Collaboration tools like Figma, Miro, and Slack are commonly used to streamline teamwork and keep everyone aligned throughout the design process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital experience designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital Experience Designer, you need a solid background in user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, along with proficiency in design principles and a relevant degree or certification. Expertise with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sketch, and prototyping platforms is typically required. Strong collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills help you translate user needs into engaging digital experiences. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating intuitive, effective, and visually appealing digital products that meet both user and business objectives.

What is the difference between Digital Experience Designer vs User Experience Designer?

AspectDigital Experience DesignerUser Experience Designer
FocusDesigning comprehensive digital interactions across platforms, including websites, apps, and digital touchpointsOptimizing user interactions primarily within websites and apps to improve usability and satisfaction
SkillsUI/UX design, digital strategy, prototyping, cross-platform designUsability testing, wireframing, user research, interaction design
Work EnvironmentDesign agencies, tech companies, digital marketing firmsWeb development firms, tech companies, startups

While both roles focus on enhancing user interactions, Digital Experience Designers take a broader approach by designing seamless digital experiences across multiple platforms, whereas User Experience Designers primarily concentrate on usability within specific websites or apps. The roles often overlap, but Digital Experience Designers typically require skills in digital strategy and cross-platform design, making them suitable for projects involving multiple digital touchpoints.

Job description

Company

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

Job Area

Sales, Business Development & Marketing Group, Sales, Business Development & Marketing Group > Marketing Communications

General Summary

As a Senior UX Designer on the Digital Experience Team, you’ll shape the end-to-end experience of the website qualcomm.com—one of the most important touchpoints for customers, partners, developers, and investors worldwide. This role goes beyond a single product or brand; you’ll design across the entire website ecosystem, helping define how Qualcomm communicates its full portfolio—from cutting‑edge AI and connectivity to automotive and IoT solutions—through clear, compelling, and high‑quality digital experiences.

Why This Role Stands Out

You’ll operate at the intersection of technology, storytelling, and design craft, translating complex innovations into intuitive, engaging web experiences. This role requires both systems thinking and pixel‑level execution—someone equally comfortable defining user flows and delivering polished, production‑ready layouts. You’ll work closely with marketing, product, and engineering teams to ensure the website not only looks world‑class, but performs as a strategic business platform.

What You’ll Own
  • Design end‑to‑end user journeys across qualcomm.com, from discovery through conversion
  • Create high‑fidelity webpage layouts and visual designs that reflect a premium, modern brand
  • Define and evolve content strategy and information architecture to simplify complex topics
  • Develop user flows, wireframes, and prototypes across a variety of web experiences
  • Ensure visual polish and consistency across pages, modules, and components
  • Partner with engineering to deliver production‑ready designs that align with technical constraints
  • Contribute to and apply the Qualcomm Design System across experiences
  • Use data, experimentation, and insights to optimize user experience and performance
  • Advocate for accessibility and inclusive design best practices
How You’ll Work
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with marketing, product, engineering, and research teams
  • Balance strategic thinking (flows, IA, content) with hands‑on design execution
  • Translate abstract or technical concepts into clear, user‑friendly experiences
  • Iterate quickly and comfortably in a fast‑paced, agile environment
Ways to Stand Out
  • Experience designing large‑scale corporate websites or marketing platforms, with a strong sense of visual polish and production quality
  • Background working with technical, enterprise, or developer audiences, translating complex concepts into clear user experiences
  • Proven ability to integrate AI into the design process, including:
    • Using AI tools to accelerate ideation, wireframing, and content generation
    • Applying AI to UX workflows such as research synthesis, prototyping, and iteration
    • Exploring or designing with AI‑powered experiences (e.g., personalization, recommendations, conversational interfaces, or agents)
  • Contributions to or stewardship of a design system, ensuring scalability and consistency across a complex site
  • Ability to seamlessly blend UX, visual design, and content strategy into cohesive, high‑impact experiences
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating:
    • Page layout and visual design craft
    • Visual assets—this is NOT a UX purist role; hands‑on experience with polished assets
    • User flows and interaction design
    • Content structuring and storytelling
  • Proven ability to design complex, information‑rich experiences
  • Experience working closely with engineering teams and understanding technical constraints
  • Strong communication skills and ability to present and defend design decisions
  • Proficiency in Figma and modern design workflows
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and modern front‑end frameworks (preferred)
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related work experience
  • OR Associate’s degree and 5+ years of Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related work experience
  • OR High School Diploma or equivalent and 7+ years of Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related work experience
  • Completed advanced degrees in a relevant field may be substituted for up to two years (Master’s = one year, Doctorate = two years) of work experience
Location & Relocation

Position requires to be onsite in San Diego, 5 days a week.
