Job description

Mission Architecture Engineer

JHNA is currently seeking a talented Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) / Digital Engineer with Cameo and/or MBSE software modeling experience to join our team in the Alexandria, VA area in support of the Office of the Undersecretary for Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD(R&E)) Mission Integration. In this role, you will research and develop constructive architecture models of complex kill-webs/effects webs to analyze gaps and solutions for systems-of-systems/enterprise architectures. You will produce technical findings in graphical, written, visual, and verbal narrative products to describe capability gaps and solutions to senior leaders in OUSD (R&E). You will also contribute to developing, updating, and maintaining an architecture style guide intended to lead the broader community to standardized practices.

This position will be in the Alexandria, Virginia area and will require in-person/on-site support, with the possibility of local travel to customer sites.

Roles/Responsibilities:

As a Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) / Digital Engineer, you will work as an integral member of a government/contractor team in support of our customer's organization. As a systems engineering team member, you will work on all aspects of systems hardware and software - from conceptual design and analysis to integration and testing. The team constructs, manages, and conducts discrete mission engineering and analysis study tasks to evaluate the efficacy of legacy architectures and new technologies and capabilities applied in new mission concepts of employment to meet evolving Joint mission objectives.

Your essential job functions will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Research and develop constructive architecture models of complex kill-webs/effects webs.
  • Conduct analysis and assessments of complex kill-webs to determine capability gaps, potential solutions, and assess of technology on the kill-web/effects web performance.
  • Participate in concept testing and integration for experimentation assessments. Participate in system requirements reviews and create and/or update requirement specifications and technical documentation.
  • Assist in transition and associate reviews of technologies to a program of record.
  • Review system engineering documentation to ensure specifications meet system needs and are accurate.
  • Participate in the development of trade studies to support the selection of preferred design solutions and course of action alternatives in project development/product delivery.
  • Providing review and analysis support to the test team development and conduct of formal testing.
  • Brief OUSD (R&E) Senior Leaders, DoD Senior Leaders, and Mission Integration teammates on status and outcomes.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen with an Active Top Secret Clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related discipline.
  • 8+ years of related professional experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in mission engineering, systems engineering, or operational analysis in support of defense or military areas.
  • 5+ years of experience developing or analyzing operational and mission-level architectures (mission threads), kill chains/kill webs, CONOPs, or system-of-systems (SoS) architectures for defense or military areas.
  • 3+ years of experience with mission or system functional decomposition, system-of-systems analysis, or capability gap assessment/analysis.
  • 3+ years of experience with model-based engineering approaches, DoD Architecture Framework (DoDAF), Systems Modeling Language (SysML), Unified Architecture Framework (UAF), or other architecture modeling standards.
  • 3+ years of experience with model-based engineering and architecture tools such as Cameo, MagicDraw, Innoslate, or similar tools. Understanding of frameworks such as Unified Architecture Framework (UAF), Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF), The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF), and languages such as Unified Modeling Language (UML) and System Modeling Language (SysML).
  • Use strong verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment; present and explain technical information to colleagues, management, or sponsors.
  • Must have an understanding of system interface requirements and requirements management.
  • Knowledge or recent experience integrating systems processes and/or software development methodologies, planning, designing, and analyzing functional system processes - either hardware or software-based systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to devise solutions for complex problems that require in-depth analysis of tangible and intangible factors.
  • Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary project team that may include intel analysts, engineers, scientists, designers, and technicians.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong briefing and presentation skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Understanding of multi-segmented system architecture utilizing tools such as MagicDraw, IBM Rational Rhapsody, Sparx Enterprise Architecture (EA), or Cameo EA Suite.
  • Proficient using systems engineering modeling tools (e.g., CORE, Cameo Systems Modeler, MagicDraw, or MapleMBSE) to support system requirements, design, analysis, verification & validation, and continuing throughout development and later life-cycle phases.
  • OMG Certified Systems Modeling Professional (OCSMP) Model Builder Fundamental, OMG UAF Model User, Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP), and/or other relevant UAF and SysML certifications or Graduate Certificates.
  • Programming or scripting expertise: Knowledge of Python, MATLAB, etc., for automation and model integration.
  • Understanding of configuration control and database management.
  • Experience conducting nodal analysis on architectures developed in Cameo.
  • Experience and a demonstrated record of success in developing and implementing innovative solutions for a diverse range of highly complex multi-disciplinary problems and devising corrective actions where necessary.
