Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Roadway Design Engineer to join our Raleigh, NC transportation team. This position will primarily support North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and municipal roadway design projects, with a strong emphasis on design production, technical quality control, client engagement, and mentorship of junior staff.

The successful candidate will serve as a technical lead on roadway projects, producing and reviewing design deliverables while ensuring compliance with NCDOT standards, AASHTO guidelines, and project-specific requirements. This role is ideal for an experienced roadway engineer who enjoys hands-on design, attention to detail, and developing younger engineers.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Produce roadway design plans from preliminary engineering through final construction documents for NCDOT and municipal projects
  • Prepare and review roadway alignments, profiles, typical sections, cross sections, and geometric layouts in accordance with NCDOT manuals and policies
  • Develop and check design calculations related to roadway geometry, earthwork, drainage, pavement, and roadside features
  • Prepare maintenance of traffic (MOT), signing and pavement marking, erosion & sediment control, and right-of-way plan elements
  • Perform and document quality control (QC) reviews to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance with internal and agency standards
  • Coordinate with internal discipline teams (traffic, drainage, structures, environmental, utilities, survey) to support integrated design solutions
  • Meet with client representatives to resolve issues and ensure client satisfaction
  • Utilize CAD/design software such as MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, GEOPAK, and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers; review work and support professional development
  • Participate in design meetings, agency reviews, and internal technical discussions
  • Support proposal development and scope definition as needed
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or related field plus 8 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina or ability to obtain reciprocity within 6 months
  • 8 years of roadway design experience, including exposure to DOT or municipal projects
  • Working knowledge of NCDOT roadway design standards, manuals, and plan development processes
  • Experience with roadway design software (MicroStation/OpenRoads/GEOPAK or Civil 3D)
  • Valid US Driver's License required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices. As a condition of employment, selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review
  • Due to the nature of the projects a US Citizenship is required 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 years of roadway and highway design experience
  • Experience producing PS&E packages for NCDOT or North Carolina municipalities
  • Familiarity with ProjectWise, Bluebeam, or similar document management tools
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and technical writing abilities
