Digital Accessibility Program Manager information

What is a digital accessibility program manager?

Digital Accessibility Program Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and implementing strategies to ensure digital products and services are accessible to people with disabilities. They coordinate efforts across teams to comply with accessibility standards like WCAG and legal requirements such as the ADA. Their role includes developing policies, providing training, monitoring compliance, and collaborating with designers, developers, and stakeholders to remove digital barriers. By fostering an inclusive digital environment, they help organizations reach a wider audience and reduce the risk of legal issues related to accessibility.

How does a digital accessibility program manager collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accessibility standards are met?

A Digital Accessibility Program Manager works closely with diverse teams such as designers, developers, product managers, and content creators to embed accessibility best practices into every stage of the digital product lifecycle. They provide guidance, training, and resources to help teams understand and implement accessibility requirements and may lead regular reviews or audits to track progress. By fostering open communication and advocating for inclusive design, they help create a supportive environment where accessibility is prioritized and integrated into workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital accessibility program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital Accessibility Program Manager, you need a deep understanding of accessibility standards (such as WCAG), project management experience, and a background in web or software development. Familiarity with accessibility testing tools, assistive technologies, and relevant certifications like CPACC or WAS are highly beneficial. Outstanding communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills help drive organizational change and foster inclusive collaboration. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring digital products are accessible, legally compliant, and user-friendly for all.
