Job description

Shipping Manager

Diamond Plastics Corporation is one of today's leading PVC pipe producers in North America and one of the largest producers in the world with products for both water and sewer applications through 60 inches in diameter. Diamond Plastics has seven manufacturing facilities located strategically across the United States.

The position is responsible for responsible for all aspects of the shipping department including efficient material handling, coordination of transportation and direct personnel supervision within the department. The position is responsible for but not limited to:

  • Direct supervision of the personnel in the department to economically meet the material handling requirements of the facility.
  • Review customer orders, production schedules, and shipping orders to determine work sequences and shipping dates, types, and destinations.
  • Coordinate all common carrier deliveries, schedule times of shipment of product and negotiate shipping quotes.
  • Plan work schedules and assign duties to maintain adequate staffing levels, to ensure that activities are performed effectively, and to respond to fluctuating workloads.
  • Check specifications of materials loaded or unloaded against information contained in shipping orders.
  • Read work orders, determine work assignments and give oral instructions to shipping department on material and equipment needs.
  • Oversee and/or operate material handling equipment to load and unload product in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Ensure that bundle and band material still meets inspection.
  • Check product for visual defects or damage prior to shipment leaving.
  • Ensure that all shipments are correctly loaded and stable.
  • Confer with customers, supervisors, contractors, and other personnel to exchange information and to resolve problems.
  • Oversee and/or assist with moving product and other materials to and from yard and production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, and containers, by hand or using forklifts and other equipment.
  • Oversee and perform inventory counting and reporting.
  • Enter receiving and input of receiving orders into PRS (Purchase Receiving System) and disclose any inventory discrepancies.
  • Oversee and direct personnel in carrying out general yard duties such as cleaning up debris/scrap, maintenance up keep of the yard and/or equipment, and maintaining efficiency of the stock inventory in the yard.
  • Inspect yard equipment for wear and for conformance to specifications.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on loading equipment. Requisition needed personnel, supplies, equipment, parts, or repair services.
  • Assess training needs of staff; then provide appropriate instruction/training in coordination with the Shipping Lead.
  • Resolve personnel problems, complaints, and formal grievances when possible, or refer them to the Operations Manager for resolution.
  • Recommend or implement personnel actions, such as employee selection, evaluation, and rewards or disciplinary actions.
  • Keep immediate supervisor fully informed of issues or unusual matters of significance.
  • Attend staff meetings as required.
  • Reliable attendance.
  • Comply with all company standards, rules and policies.
  • Attend 1-2 Supervisor Training Seminars per year.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Must be able to work 8-hour shifts.
  2. Must be able to stand and walk up to 8 hours per day.
  3. Must be able to lift, push and lift product with weights up to 60 pounds.
